Went to Columbus for a repair estimate yesterday, so I thought I’d stop by REI and take a lap. I’m approaching the carabiners and cords when I see a guy talking to an employee about “…and there’s platform under my feet, but not a big one…” so I put 2 and 3 together and determined he was looking for some saddle do-dads. I excuse-me’d right in to save the clearly floundering, likely vegan clerk from another episode of, “I Actually Don’t Really Use This Stuff But Is There Something I Can Help You With?”
So I said, “are you hunting from a saddle?”
Homie goes, “yeah actually” and the clerk had a bit of a non-compute.
I continued, “Are you looking for a carabiner for your bridge?”
“Yeah actually.”
“Which saddle?”
“Tethrd Phantom.”
“Go with the Trango Auto-locking. You could get a Black Diamond and it will be really light and slick for your bridge, but with amsteel that’s not a huge issue so save $10 and get the trango.”
I handed the employee the carabiner and, realizing he was out of his element, wished us both luck on our seasons and brought it to the register for my new friend as they do at REI.
We stood by the carabiners for another 15 minutes and he picked my brain about hunting from a saddle while I picked his brain about hunting in general. He doesn’t know anyone who hunts from a saddle and he was quite thankful for my serendipitous approach. love these moments when I have them in the wild.
Turns out he’s a vet and used to teach Hunter Safety, now owns a gun shop and helps with the veterans’ hunts here in Ohio. Saw the Anderson slings and OG TL years ago but never thought it’d be comfortable, then crossed the threshold into his 50s and realized the saddle looked much more comfortable than it had before. I hope he has a good experience with it and those vets pile them deers UP!
