IDK why I said wrapped in paracord, meant black tape lol. But Grandad said that it was cold, middle of the rut. He was hunting a power line on the ground, and rattled himself. This deer came at him on a string for like 300 yards. Said he got to 20 yards and they had one of those five minute stand offs where my Grandad was stuck and couldn't move. He said that as soon as the deer turned he shot him with a Fred Bear, signature Black Bear recurve made in 1953 (that I also still have). Said he smoked him and he ran like 10 yards and fell over dead. Sent the deer off to get aged and he was like 8 or 9, can't remember.

Like I said I know they're too big, but I just can't leave them sitting on the shelf and take some little pack rack lol

I have a Buck folding knife that is a treasure to me. Its not old, old, but old enough to have been with me in the best years of my hunting career. Its solid, and I can sharpen it fairly easy. Its been lost and found, and I panic when I'm in the bush and realize its not with me once in a while when I'm hurrying too much to get out there.

My release. Its the full feel for the whole gig I think. Changing bows is easy but knowing that release and the comfort of it and being trusting in it is the biggest things overall I feel

We all have that one piece of saddle or hunting gear that we cherish and guard jealously. What is your most precious piece of equipment and why?
@BackSpasm - I wouldn't say I'm "attached to it" or that it's "cherished" - I'd just say it's my most *important* piece of gear: My handheld GPS unit. It has offline maps and satellite imagery overlays that always work regardless of cell signal strength; It stores all the intel I gather on scouting trips (deer sightings, deer sign, and other hunter's stand locations); It keeps a downloadable track of every walk I take in the woods; It can route me to any hunting spot I've marked with a waypoint - and do it via my preferred approach route ... in the dark ... avoiding the need to place reflective tacks or ribbons that are evidence of my hunting spots for other hunters to find; It links with my home computer to keep detailed records for review, analysis, and hunt strategy formulation. It's more accurate at pinpointing locations than smartphone apps like On-X and Huntstand. I don't go in the woods without it.

Incredible replies so far. Many unexpected answers too! Kept them coming fellas!

Randall Pathfinder. Gift from Dad way back. He’s got a pile of Randall’s. I lost one somehow when I moved from college to real life. Two things he doesn’t let me live down, totaling his car at 15 and losing one of his Randall’s.

I'd say my bow simply because it has really opened my eyes to the joys of archery again.

After that maybe my safeguard because of the simplicity that it brings to my saddle setup. 1 piece to ascend, sit and rappel from without having to disconnect and reconnect equipment is money

This is actually interesting to me, at first thought, my bino harness was the first thing I thought of. But the more I thought about it, I could easily adjust adn just hang them. It would just require more movement. Honestly, except for my bow, I'm sure I could learn to live without any of the items...

How about a plain old generic prusik knot? I have one on my tether, lineman rope, and even my bridge. I use one while SRTing and rappelling. Before I found out about the newer rope style strap/tether, I was using an ancient sewn strap with a death-trap "safety" harness that had a buckle that made it a PITA to adjust or move up the tree.

Still to this day, every time I play around with a prusik, I think, "This sure is nifty. I wonder who figured this out. I wish I had known about friction hitches 15 years ago..."

This year, I really love my HattyBo call. Made from mahogany. Rich sounds...

Whats with the mods? Sound dampening?
Yes. I feel like the tone is better. Instead of the high kinda hollow sound it gives it a smoother richer tone. I set it to mimic a younger buck and of course I go easy with the volume. It has also never frozen up on me which is a plus. I bought another right after I got this one it doesn't sound the same. I was wondering if I could get it to sound as good if I wrapped the whole thing in electrical tape, but I have yet to try it.

My Jim Stepp Modified Step I split the step to make a four point. This makes an extremely solid step.
