Why don't yall 2TC?

I did try it. I put 3/16" amsteel in one end of some 5/16 resc tech. Was fatter and stiffer but ended up limp.
Also, Brocky was right and the hitch needs tending when moving from a fattened portion to a normal rope portion, but not with the steel wire, no adjustment to my LHA necessary.
What rope and amsteel combination did @Brocky use to get his rope stiff, the rope that held itself up?

I used 4mm amsteel inside the core of C-IV, after taking out the inner core strands. The last ones were stiffened except for the last one or two feet, to be able to tie a stopper or friction hitch for a foot loop. A consistent diameter is the safe way to go, plus the stiffness might be easier on the foot.

A concern with the spring wire might be if you slipped or fell towards the tree, while the loop was expanded, instead of backward, you may slide down the trunk without the loop closing up.

I have tried a stiff rope on trees (not 2TC), and I didn't care for it because of this. Any time you unweight it, it does open, which makes it easier to move. But, that movement can be up or down. Down isn't always the way you planned on heading.

Agreed. I love my current tethers which are stiff but you've gotta keep an eye on them for this reason

I guess that could happen, but in a 2TC scenario 1 of your tethers is tight when you're moving the other, I think it'd more likely happen to the top tether when moving it up while your foot kicked out, so worst case scenario is it would catch when it hit where your foot tether is cinched!?
However, if the tether is in girth hitch mode, wouldn't the friction if the rope on the tree cause it to catch and cinch, albeit after a short trip?
Also, I don't see how a soft tether would react any different to a forward fall if you've opened it up to advance it...won't it all depend on the rope catching the bark?

Ah so you filled the whole say 11' rope, from the eye except the 2' at the end. Gotcha.
So 3/16" is 4.7mm....so ill have to try it on the C-IV, only tried the ultra tech while my wife and I were watching Oppenheimer.
 
I've heard of others using "tether handles" so that you don't put your fingers underneath the ropes. Does anyone have pics of what they are using that you would be willing to share?

I have used various forms of tether handles including: the original sewn webbing loops, Amsteel dogbones, zip tie loops, 3D printed hooks etc. My favorite are the sewn webbing loops followed by the Amsteel. The Zip ties are the easiest to make, but they are also the easiest to slide off the end of your rope as you are packing up. I left too many of those in the woods to continue using them.

The 3/16” does fit, makes it about 10 mm, but doesn’t seem to make it any stiffer than 5/32”, the 4mm I used.
