Question: archery season here, it’s legal to take a doe. So would you shoot the first doe or hope it pulls in a buck during the rut?
I kind of like that management approach.Where I'm at it's earn a buck for your second buck, you must take two doe and before your third buck, (I rarely get a chance at 3 bucks), you must take three antlerless. Our doe season starts in September and our buck season starts in October, so I'm trying to knock the does down prior to when things get very interesting.
I will let does with fawns walk but the first doe by itself walks past I will take it. With that said… first 3 weeks of the season here is earn a buck. If you aren’t going to shoot a doe you might as well sit home.
If you wanna strictly talk management and deer herd health I think it’s a no brainer to shoot only does with fawns. Fact of the matter is in 99% of the places we hunt the doe to buck ratio is way too high and deer in general are massively overpopulated. That doe with 2 little ones is obviously fertile and reproducing, so taking her out will have much more impact Than the old doe not producing anymoreI shoot does with fawns on purpose. My thinking is that mature deer are the smartest ones, apparently. So I want the deer in my area to have every advantage that’s aimed at helping them learn to survive, removed. The result is a dumber deer herd. Then I can be successful, because I suck at hunting.
Real talk, I agree with Mr. Koolaid. Ohhh yehhhh
I've never heard of a doe that has quit reproducing from age. Maybe that's a thing in MO?If you wanna strictly talk management and deer herd health I think it’s a no brainer to shoot only does with fawns. That's why I shoot the fawns too.I don’t get much enjoyment out of shewing fawns away from their dead mother.
