Youtube is dead

The recommendation algorithm is bad....either on purpose or not......I think it might be tailored to binge watching, short attention spans, and nonstable sense of self (that youtube has helped create in people).

Let's say I watch a dinosaur related short documentary on youtube and then click on a similar one shown to the right while playing. I do that a bit and then the youtube recommendation algorithm now thinks I'm a junior paleontologist and 80% of my recommendations are dinosaurs. You'd think they'd cleverly combine all my viewing habits over the last decade and give me something that might surprise me at how good a fit it is for me....nope, light switch style.

Edit: I'm just surprised that their algorithm reminds me of what a 10 year old kid would produce "just show them more of what they've looked at recently".

If you can keep all of that in mind, youtube has a lot of really awesome content still. Paying for premium means you lose ads and can download stuff for when you don't have signal. It's worth it to me just to be able to chill and listen to David Suchet read the Bible, watch the old Huston Smith PBS series, catch a few podcasts, and listen to Thich Nhat Han's dharma talks.

Way more interesting stuff than the drivel my wife watches on other platforms.
Absolutely this! Concerts from the 70’s. “How to” do stuff/build stuff/repair stuff. Ideas for suv conversions. I watch YouTube while she watches the killer/cop/lifetime/hallmark stuff. Watching THP or Midwest Whitetail during the hot summer months helps pass the time. Besides practicing climbing on palm trees!

The YouTube algorithm has changed, and the recommendations are useless now. It is a lot harder to find good videos now. Any video covering a controversial subject gets labeled with the blue dialog box under the video. YouTube isn't near as good as it use to be.

I've known some relatively high level computer programmers and tech people. They are almost all on the spectrum to some degree and make the mistake of thinking a competence in one specific area (programming) means they are globally more competent than others in most/all areas. This helps explain for me why big tech thinks it is only right that they socially engineer us because they know better. When really, they are just a bunch of super nerds.

I hear books are going to be the hottest new thing before the next big burning.
They already are. Global book purchases are rising and projected to continue rising. I know I have new appreciation for the end result of somebody thinking deeply about a topic for the length of time it takes to write/edit/publish a book vs crapping out digital content.

Speaking for a moment from the "creator" side, everything has a life cycle, and fluctuations within that cycle. Summer turns to winter, hormones fluctuate, trees grow in summer and sleep in winter. Scientist stopped the search for the Atomos and embraced waves instead with their peaks and troughs.

Creative endeavors have a life cycle. It honestly didn't take me long to believe that there wasn't much interesting left to say about saddle hunting gear. I did my fair share of fluff content for a bit and kinda let it die/did other content I enjoyed making. Also moved into writing, which is personally more fulfilling and less whoreish in a way.

Tldr is that channels come and go. The folks who do youtube for a long time (I admit sheepishly to watching some jacksepticeye) take breaks and switch it up a lot to stay engaged and sane. But over time you notice creative dry spells where the videos don't have the spark. It's hard to stay self-aware about that

Staleness of YOUTUBE
No offense to anyone or the og of course but, I admit a huge skeptic of most people and things just through experiences I have went through and learned from. Most Social Media has been a pretty touchy and sore subject for me so, With that said lol.
Yes Yes I Know and am very used to it nowadays lol I will get some hate or backlash for this but, Its just how I feel and from been through College communications classes and Marketing classes the last few years. I know how the algorithms and th bs works Here is my thoughts on "stale youtube, TikTok, and yes Rumble" which a lot of righties want everyone to go to now.
This refers of course mostly in the (deer) Niche
Most channels or new groups popping up are mostly regurgitated info learned from another group or another channel with the lack of referencing where it was learned lol TIKTOK is getting the same way.
I have learned very quickly how most of these big TV shows and these YOUTUBE white tail god channels work.
Believe me they all have ( just like most businesses) a business' design or plan on how to draw people to watch and keep them coming back.
Content and the timing that content is posted is most of the time key. THumbnails, cross posting, refrencing, shou outs, hashtags. It is alot of screen time.
I wont go into the strategy part because that's a whole different topic .
I will say this there is some decent start up info out there but, we need to realize that Believe it or not These shows or groups are not out to help you. In the long run, they are pumping content out to keep you coming back to watch so the watch times and numbers go up, so the revenue goes up. It is all about the money.
That's social media an that's how most of this influencer crap works and its fine and people do what they got to do to grow their platforms.
I choose My posts on my pages to be raw and real which I have kept that going since day one. I have zero affiliation with anyone nor have I ever wanted one. My posts are really aiming for newer hunters or hunters with very limited time to hunt or scout.
Being selective on who to watch or listen to is really important because There are so many companies claiming to have all the answers along with countless reps who claim the same.
Of course being on social media for almost 5 years now providing content for a very small audience has presented opportunities from A few companies with products which I have tried out for them and I have told them what I have thought.
Most of these companies ask you if you like the product feel free to post a good review or video but, please if this does not work for you then do not post anything about it lmao, Commo sense of course they wont want negativity on a product that they want to promote.
Dealing with companies as a so called Influencer give s you experiences to guide people to locate or identify good unbiased reviews and content along with very good and reputable companies who want and use the feedback from their customers.
I will give an example of how tough a content provider on social media has it or just stupid things they have to put up with.
Back in 2019 One of the best tree stand companies on the market contacted me and wanted me to start filming my hunts for them. I respectfully declined and explained why I was not interested in their offer. At the time this offer could not have come at a more awful time .
I had a broken deer stand at this time and I had I told them I am doing a lot of hunts from the ground ,They then without me asking sent me a new deer stand for free. They said please think about it and let us know. I still declined but was able to keep the stand and love the stand and after about a dozen sits or so in it I did a short in season review on my channel about the stand.
A few weeks went buy and I did not understand but, I kept getting all of these p.m.'s, texts, and emails from people associated with I guess a rival company I must have blocked 200 people from everywhere. Lmao
I then was also Banned from all platforms of this rival company . Please note that This story is personal and is past me but its something influencers or content makers have to deal with.
After that season I liked that free stand so much and as a saddle hunter and a Tinkerer I like a Hybrid setup so, I then went out and bought for FULL PRICE a smaller version of the stand along with 3 of their sticks for remember FULL Price. So the influence still costed me a lot of money lmao.
Fast forward to this past spring, I had a conversation with designer from XOP about longer straps being available for fat guys lol.
During that conversation He then requested if I would try out their new turkey vest.
Having already bought and used the XOP striker pack all season I said " sure I will check it out for you"
Well I love the vest ITs awesome and works great, FOR ME It needs a seat though.
The last 3 years I have turned down sponsorships from 3 different pretty decent You tube channels and gear companies.
I don't want to be boxed into any single company because I like gear and, I love to tinker lol.
All the new stuff that comes on the market makes me think, hmmmm I could make this work lol.
MY rambling goin on and chit chatter is me trying to explain how providing content is not easy and is super involved,
Being that its not deer season and turkey season is just wrapping up is probably why its so stale but, the thing is alot of good content providers will be like deer season ( seasonal) like me they will usually be pretty quiet during most of the off season only because of time and money spent on the things explained above which in my case would be time.
Don't get me wrong I love helping people and I probably wont even monetize my channel because I just like to help and be constructive in something that needs to be pure and 100% raw and real. Most like everything When money gets involved Alot of stuff changes for the worse

Also, never click on videos that have thumbnails with fake expressions. Those are the type of “content creators” that likely figured out the algorithm - those jokers are the worst. They always look something like this:

Often they are "reaction videos" which is basically just watching information from someone, which is an easy way to get views. They've now moved to "reaction-reaction videos" where someone will watch Joe Rogan watch and comment on something else and then they will comment on Rogan commenting on the thing. I've even seen three times removed "reaction-reaction-reaction videos".

I can't say exactly when it happened but I just stopped watching THP. There was a tipping point somewhere there where the content turned a corner, and they didn't feel like the little guys anymore going against the mainstream. Not saying it's bad content, it just changed. I'm starting to really get that feeling from Dan Infalt. It's not the commercialization so much with him but the need to be constantly creating content. You can only say so much about buck bedding so many times in so many ways. I sort of think it was when Josh came on board and you can tell that he wanted to make a full time job out of promoting Dan. Don't get me wrong, I like Josh and the content he makes, but I think they just need to maybe go for quality over quantity.

I agree. The THP video that turned me off forever was in N Dakota and they were sitting on top of a bluff and vectored in Zach to a bedded buck. That was a couple years ago.
Now instead of Dan and Mario, it's Josh and Dan. I watch Dan's early videos. But Beyond The Echo episode 81 whitetail mapping masterclass, I think it is, has an impressive set of lessons. Josh has started running the show and Dan just sits in and talks. Oh well. Everything changes, nothing remains the same.

I think our reaction video fascination parallels Japanese mukbang content.

Both started to fulfill a psychological need for an interpersonal relationship. Eastern cultures aren't quite as removed as we are from communal eating so people started watching videos of other people eating while they ate alone. We obviously like to cowatch entertainment and reaction videos are a way to laugh and joke with our friends when we don't have any.

Starts kinda wholesome, ends kinda sad when the algorithm takes it to the extreme.

I agree. When by myself, I've watched people listen to songs I like and react to them.

Adblocker YouTube extension stops all ads. If on Android, the non play store app called YouTube Vanced completely blocks all ads and even embedded ads in the videos. I literally haven't seen a YouTube ad in years
Youtube Vanced is shutting down after receiving a "Cease and desist" letter from Youtube.

For the last six weeks all I get is this message on Vanced

I never really watched a lot of YouTube but we are going to the Boundary Waters in a few weeks and I somehow stumbled upon Lost Lakes channel which is pretty good if you are into canoe tripping. That channel led me to Northern Scavengers channel which has me hooked. Those guys blow my mind! They take dedication and hard core to a whole new level.
I hate YouTube's politics but there is a lot of good stuff on there...I guess it's in-between all the garbage.
There is a lot of quality if you know where to look and there's a lot of crap that is best avoided.
I used to spend a few hours a day with Foxnews on the boobtube but they seem to have gone down the toilet.
BTW, the next Alone is about ready to kick off.

Separating wheat from chafe has always been and will continue to be an art form. In literature we benefit from publishers who selectively collect and promote content that meets their standards. Network TV once did something similar and still does to some degree. YouTube is a bit more like the Wild West - so long as the content doesn’t violate various parameters it enters the platform. Content that makes money rises to the top and is promoted more heavily regardless of the “quality”. The platform doesn’t care about what you want or like or need they just want to keep you plugged in. And this is why books won’t loose relevance: a reader can enjoy a purchased book without persecution of the free market, it can be shared amongst friends, we can even go to a library and borrow them for free.
