Your climbing method.

What are you using for a ROS? Just the bolts like you mentioned in the beginning of your post, or are you using something else most of the time?

Majority If the time I use 5 cranford screw in "t" steps, otherwise I'm using ameristeps on strap with the OCB boat buckle. This is my entire climbing method and platform the majority of the time:

I need to come up with a better hand drill. My EZ Kut drill feels like it’s coming apart and is getting more noisy. I’m also getting tired of drilling holes. Makes me sweat too much, either from drilling or from hanging off the tree the whole time going up. I love predrilling with a cordless drill though. Just not a fan of having to drill out ice. I hate to leave bolts in all of them. Some presets I’ve not even hunted out of yet. Most, just once. Screwing in T-steps for a ROS sounds like more sweat. Lol

Treehopper is supposed to reintroduce their hand drill soon. I have it, it is my favorite, and much more solid. Screwing in t steps isnt actually that bad. They go in as easy, if not easier than drilling holes--not sure if you've used any of the cranford steps, but their screw profile is by far the best. I also have about 40 of them, and have been leaving them sometimes for presets if I plan on coming back within the week.

Never have used any of the Cranford steps. What do the Screw in T steps cost?

care to share how you do this, I've been looking for a quick way to carry and climb like you mention

For sure! Hopefully I can explain this with a couple pictures. For the duffle bag strap I just tied some 550 cord for attaching points.

On my way to the tree my set up looks like this:

408d5c5554c457f3be41f5d4d3c2df68.jpg

I take a strap and buckle and just wrap all my ropes and aiders to keep them tight to the sticks. Depending on what type of hunting I’m doing I either carry them with the duffle bag strap or strap them to my pack/stand.

Once I get to my tree I take that outside strap off and they look like this:

490df49edfbc284b50ce480b6af66261.jpg

Now I throw the strap over my shoulder with the sticks on my left side, ropes hanging between my body and the sticks and the top of the steps pointing towards the tree. This exposes the strap and buckle on the outside of the sticks.

I simply unbuckle and re insert underneath the next stick, always removing the bottoms stick first. After I remove a stick I just slide the rest of the sticks around to my backside so they are out of the way until I need another.

Hands down the best way I’ve been able to do it. Mine stay pretty tight and silent. You can always use an extra long strap for multiple wraps on each stick and they will be rock solid.

Hope this helps!

Lone wolf makes what's called the "Stick Caddy" which is this exact concept, worked A LOT better than their original straps to hold the sticks together. I like this DIY for the Hawks, nice job!

thanks

now I need to visualize how you do this

I get how you put things together just a little fuzzy on how you climb, reach and hang them

Ok gotcha. When my kid gets back I’ll have her take some pictures of me at the tree. I’m always in my tree spider harness or my saddle so anytime I’m hanging the sticks I’m using my lineman’s belt. Let’s me get both hands on the sticks.

Started doing this more as my preset bolt holes are full of ice.
This is how I rope modded my homemade sticks and how I use Carl’s Versa Strap (Gear Strap)

sure take your time

I've climbed and tried multiple ways of carrying my sticks up the tree with me

I've hung them off my waist and also very similar to what your doing but still haven't developed how to position them on my back
remove them without struggling from them falling out my hands

maybe just need more practice

I just hang the first stick, then temporarily hang the second one as high as I can reach then I have a loop of lime green paracord on each side of my saddle and I hang the last two sticks on those. Put on lineman’s belt and climb the first stick , reposition the second stick, climb, grab one stick from my side, hang it, climb, repeat. They have never clanked on anything or fallen off the loop. I loop it over both the steps and the standoffs so they can not come off until I take them off.

Ok I took a couple photos. With the 1st stick is attached I climb up with the rest of the sticks slung around behind my back. Once I’m on top of the 1st stick I attach my lineman’s belt and slide the sticks from behind my back to my left side. This way I can easily reach the strap and buckle.

Unbuckle the next stick and rebuckle the rest. Slide them to the back and attach the next stick. I just repeat that process until I have them all on the tree.

Reverse the process going down.

Now I think there are a couple keys to making this work.

1. Short sticks that stack well.
2. Single strap to hold the sticks together and it’s right in the middle for easy access.

It probably won’t work as well with full length sticks or if you have them strapped together at the ends.

This does not allow you to climb with anything else on your back or it gets to be too much. With my saddle I have my platform hanging low so it doesn’t interfere with the sticks. If I have my backpack I just put it on my pull rope with my bow.

got it, thanks much appreciated

I need practice, I think it's the way I've got them strapped that is giving me issues

I have been using the Predator platform with 3 cut Heliums with the rope mod and a one step aider on the bottom 2 this year. It has worked well enough, but I have been purchasing the necessary equipment for SRT for next season. I love the idea of doing pre sets on public with paracord. Will keep the Heliums handy, but SRT just sounds perfect for my style of hunting. I am also looking into trying ROS out as well.

When you can, show us some videos of your SRT setup and techniques. I’m interested in learning some SRT skills myself. I have more than a few places with trees that I could hunt where conventional methods are sketchy at best.

What bit do you use with your cordless drill?

An EZ Kut bit.
