2016 Group Hunt Planning

Wow! Can't believe I've missed this thread, to answer a couple of the questions some of you had, Spurs are not allowed on public land so that's out, bring sticks or rope setups, and as for deer tagging it's all automated now you can either call or go online to register and tag a deer. I've been hunting in Ohio for a long time and never had to quarter out a deer to get it out, can usually drag it out, we don't have miles and miles of uncharted territories to have to pack it out. Oh and those that would like stay at a hotel Logan is less than 1/2hr away and there are some there. I'll will try and head over sometime and check it out its only about an hour from me and see if I can't find an area to set up a group hammock hang

Ok, so here is everyone's chance to speak up. Right now I'm leaning towards staying at Begley's campground in the Athens Ranger District.

They have hot showers and electrical hookups, and the prices are cheap so that anyone who wants should be able to come.

Price List
CAMPING WITH 30 AMP
ELECTRICAL HOOKUPS
$10.00
Price consists of one person/night. Children 10 and under FREE with a paying adult.

PRIMITIVE CAMPING
$5.00
Price consists of one person/night. Children 10 and under FREE with a paying adult.

PARKING
$2.00 for the day.
(overnight parking is consider primitive camping.)

SHOWERS
$2.00
(quaters only)
Handicap Accessible

Fire Wood
15 pieces for $5.00

Also just wanted to throw this out there for anyone who is interested. I've got all my backcountry gear that I'm dying to use, so depending how things go I may hike in deep and stay for a night. It would be neat if someone else wanted to do that.

Thoughts?

Is camping allowed on the Wayne outside of camping areas? That would be pretty sweet!

My take on spurs.. if they do no more noticeable damage than a sharp climbing stand then whats the difference.. I have read the OH WMA Regs and they are very similar to WV here is the first one on OHIO (A) It shall be unlawful for any person to conceal or bury any property or to injure, remove, deface, damage, or destroy any tree, plant, lawn, embankment, decoration, poster, sign, fence, or artifacts valued at less than one thousand dollars on any area under agreement with and administered by or under control of the division of wildlife. that being said Wayne National Forest itself does not have anything in regards to tree climbing other than a short statement saying... only portable tree stands or blinds may be used for hunting.. and in our case gaffs are a part of our portable tree stand, enough to get you out with only a warning in my opinion worst case scenario leave a set of steps in the car should you get kicked out of the tree after explaiing yourself in the unlikely event a forestry worker does appear

License and tags are easy. $125 for non res hunting and a $25 either sex tag and your good to go. Ohio's regs are really simple and easy. The number of either sex tags you can buy vary by area but it's usually 2-3 and only one can be a buck. I've been lucky enough to fill both buck tags the two years I've hunted there so I've got my money's worth so far!

Freaking awesome. Thanks. Hope I can figure it out with no scouting. Except online. Are we bow hunting during gun season there? And are spurs allowed, or do I need to go with heavier, less favored rope ascent or climbing sticks?

No gun seasons will be in at that time. Will have to check on the spurs. I looked in the regs and it didn't really say anything that would say "no" but a call to the DNR might be needed for that.

The least restrictive areas for tree climbers are national and state/provincial forests. National forests in the U.S. are run by the U.S. Forest Service, a branch of the Department of Agriculture that was formed in 1905. The mission statement of the Forest Service, updated in 1960, says "National Forests shall be administered for outdoor recreation, range, timber, watershed, and wildlife and fish purposes. This administration must be carried out in a way that provides the achievement and maintenance in perpetuity of a high level annual or regular periodic output of the various renewable resources without impairment of the productivity of the land."

State/provincial forests are usually run by the various forestry commissions in each jurisdiction.

The rangers in both national and state forests are primarily involved in fire and pest protection for the trees, although some have been designated to work with the various visitors to the forests. There are two types of national forests in the U.S., and tree climbers should be aware of their differences.

The first type of national forest is the kind that is managed for the normal production of timber and pulp. These areas are usually served by well-maintained logging roads and they have generally loose regulations that allow a wide range of recreational activities for visitors. Professional guides are allowed to lead groups into most national forests, and people are generally allowed to camp anywhere except in areas specifically posted for no camping. Many national forests are also wildlife management areas for hunting.

The second type of national forest is the designated wilderness area. Most roads into designated wilderness areas have been closed off and allowed to grow up, motorized vehicles are prohibited, logging is generally not allowed, and commercial activities such as professional guide services are not allowed. Backcountry camping is generally allowed, except in areas specifically posted for no camping. Hunting is allowed in many wilderness areas on specific days.

I hope she sleeps a lot that week. Lol.
Cause you're gonna be spending every free moment for a while tinkering with it. It's fun. It's functional. It's addictive.
I'm constantly making or modifying one these days. My aero hunter is barely recognizable , it's so different.
But I enjoy it and it gives me something to do besides killing squirrels and rabbits in the garden.

Well it should be here thursday and I would love to go turkey hunting for the first time on Saturday. She works friday night (nurse) so I will have that whole night to get it setup.

Just put in my first garden...I can relate with the squirrels.

You'll probably be able to get it set up well enough to hang in it for a while in one night. But you'll be tinkering and adjusting it for a bit until you get it"just right".
I've been eating out of my main garden for a while now. At first it was just greens like spinach and such. But the last month or so has brought me strawberries every day, tomatoes, jalapenos, and this past weekend I started eating the first ripe blueberries.blackberries will probably be ripe starting in next week or two
Other normal garden veggies aren't doing as good yet. Squash and cucumber and zucchini are up but not budding yet. Gonna have to start them inside too from now on probably. Cabbages, lettuces, those things are all pretty quick and easy to just plant seeds outside and go. At least for me. I'm no expert gardener, I just love to eat the things I can grow and or kill.

Save your money on the hammock... for now. I am working on making a hammock and tarp from Silnylon. If I can pull it of and find some clearance pieces of silnylon, I can make a pair and a carry bag for probably less than $20 in materials.

I'm very interested in this. Are you making the hammock completely from Silnylon? I may also look into making my own.

I spend ENTIRELY too much time between Saddle Hunter and Hammock Forums. Those are my two addictions...with a healthy dose of golf, fishing and snow sports thrown in of course. :D :D :D

I guess it could be worse. My two addictions could be heroin and meth...with a healthy does of gambling, prostitutes and hunting from a tree stand thrown in.
