2017 Deer Contest Discussion

It might be a bit early to celebrate as I am sitting at 1st blood waiting on backup with flashlights. (Silly me only brought a dinky little headlamp that is dull.) At 6:16pm this evening I sent an arrow into the lungs of Patches! He is a massive bodied buck with thick webbing in the antlers and white "paint" patches on his hip. Got it done at 15 yards exactly with a 54# longbow! I will update you once the recovery is done. Just wanted to share the excitement with everyone while I wait for a flash light. Here is first blood next to a Stepp Ladder bag that holds 10 stepps for reference.

Can’t find the thread that shows the team totals. Which one is it in again...?

Way to go @DaveT1963 on the doe. Still sad to see you are not on the Trad Team. But I must say, that is a beautiful bow! We need the specs, wood combo and any info you can give us on the bow. It is a work of art (and apparently deadly!)

Thanks - and thanks for posting pic for me.

I had Abe Pinner from Caribou Bows make this for me. Black & white Ebony with M. Ebony is riser. Burl walnut crotch limbs and antler inlays as well as a drawing inlay. I got a matching longbow/recurve made this spring. So far one arrow one kill - never released an arrow last year as I was hunting a couple specific bucks that I never saw but once - that and I found one dead.
Year before four arrows four kills - I am hoping this trend continues :) I did let a 2 1/2 year old nice eight point (100") walk right under my stand Saturday morning - holding out for his GrandPa :)

yeah I probably handicap team 3 being so dang picky - just hard for me to pull the string on a younger buck these days - an the part of TX public land I hunt just don't have many 3 1/2+ year old bucks

Ya, I’m handicapping team 1 as well.
Mostly from lack of skill, but also because I am after a toad of a southeast oklahoma buck. If I get him, he has 13 scoreable points and is a true hoss. I am basically only hunting him right now, hoping one of the many does frequenting my dad’s place drag him or a big 9 point in the area by.
The 13 pointer keeps crossing into the property within 5 minutes of the end of legal hunt, so there is hope to get him on his feet sooner.

Also, antler restrictions kept me from shooting a small 8 point two weeks ago.
