2017 Deer Contest Discussion

Kudos to all that are out and about in the woods. You all are doing work. This contest has definitely been a good one this year. Lots of deer and good stories.

So the story is fairly boring at best. I've known about the deer for a few weeks( trail cam). Went in and found what I assumed was his sign based on the cam pics. Had no clue where he was bedded but I did have a clue where he'd been. I needed a north wind to hunt this spot because it would carry my scent straight toward the river. Typically when that happens the travel is very predictable. I am a huge believer in midday hunting during all phases of the rut. So I decided to go since I had the wind I needed. I recently acquired a treehopper belt and have been experimenting with it as my lineman's. I am also packing my ambush saddle instead of wearing it during my walk. So basically I climb up on my spurs, set my platform, hang bow, hang pack and then raise my treehopper to chest level. Next I retrieve my saddle and step into it while standing on platform. Next I tether to the tree, remove treehopper and remove spurs. Well today I was still climbing when I spotted the deer about 50 yards out. He appeared to have a destination in mind because he was moving steadily with his head up. I may have been 10 ft up so I snatched my bow up as quickly as possible. My release stays in my pocket at all times. (Bow hunters cardinal rule). Nocked an arrow and shot him at about 25 yards. He ran 50 yards and fell over dead. Unfortunately I wasn't wearing my saddle so a contest submission wouldn't be within the rules that define it. Maybe next time. This bow hunting stuff is so easy it's almost boring!!!!!!

@redsquirrel - Huck isn't on team 1, so I wouldn't be mad if you didn't accept his submission. However, it seems to me that shooting a deer while climbing a tree with the saddle in your pack still meets the intent of the contest. It was a saddle hunt. Not Huck's fault the deer walked in on him while he was setting up.
I don't know..... That deer scores to many points. Jk! @redsquirrel Enter it that man's deer. I agree the intent of the contest was followed.

We have sit drags and lifting slings. Now rucksack kidney pads as saddles. Standing on spikes tied to the tree with a linesmans belt. Sounds like a treehopper saddle to me. Not very comfortable for long sits but great for hanging just long enough to kill deer.

Agreed. I think his kill qualifies. Even though it makes it harder for my team to win!

I'll accept it for sure. I'd love if you guys would take @Bowhunter41002 's deer from early season too. If he wasn't on my team I would have taken it but since he is it's up to you guys. I'm lenient with the rules because it's all for fun. I take most stuff on good faith.

What were the details from that one?

I think it’s the velvet Kentucky buck that was taken before the teams were made. If u ask me, if it was taken from a saddle it should be good.

Count both or neither. Figure it out Red. I don't have warm fuzzies about mine because I wasn't in my saddle as outlined in the rules.
