Is there a saddlehunter thread about making the knaiders? or a member selling them? I'd like to try this method

yes, search for knaider. You will find an active thread in the Classifieds for buying them and you will also see an older thread about how to make them.

Small as in short or small as in tough to get you foot in?

Oh no, I can get my size 13’s in them it just seems dainty to me. I’m sure they are fine. I’m going to use it until I find something better.

For those of you worried about using it making a knaider you could use some type of strap on step below the wild edge step in place of the knaider.

I already had a BD 5 step aider and tried this last night as soon as I got home. In my haste I didnt bother with my lineman belt as I was only going up one stepp, oops lol. I actually made the mistake of pinching the aider against the tree with my Kaider foot and I had a hard time getting my foot out of the aider.

Also I might need to figure out how to keep my foot loops open because I had some trouble getting my big feet into the aider and that's without big rubber boots and a bunch of hunting gear lol.

Still I like it, hard to beat the weight savings and versatility, I hate climbing sticks lol

I was able to get my hands on a Black diamond 5 step. For one you can't use a 2in 1 without a tender for the prussick. Setting the step so high you need to be held close to the tree. best accomplished using a ropeman mechanical. Then my worst fear, you don't always get your foot in all the way. You end up fishing for the next foot loop. I'll keep trying, but I don't know if saving a couple of pounds is worth it for me. Right now I carry 6 WE steps and that gets me to 30' all day, with a knaider/swaider.

@Kurt your point about working above your head is a good one. I played around prior to hunting season with something similar and decided that it was not worth the extra effort just to eliminate one step in my overall climb up. I will revisit this idea though again because it looks slick, but probably will come to the same conclusion.

Today I took out the 5 step aider (KAILAS 5 Step Aider(Yellow)) , three LW full size sticks and a tape measure. I put my first stick up as far as I could and hooked the aider on my second step. I climbed up to the first step on the LW and picked up the aider off the second step. climbed to the top of the LW and put up the second LW as far as I could reach and so on. Of course I had the linesman belt on, guaranteed you can't do this without it. With three Lone Wolf sticks and the aider I was able to get to 27' at my feet. I didn't feel it was that difficult, a couple times I had to play with it to get my foot in the loop but nothing difficult. Of course I can't climb like @g2outdoors but with a little practice it will be awesome. Next I'll try the WE Stepps.

How y’all are you? Here in Oklahoma most trees in the areas I hunt won’t allow for that height and still get a shot off. Thinking of dropping to 2 sticks and the same aider to get 18 ft

I'm 5'10". I looked for a tree that would be easy to climb with no branches, tall and straight. I had another stick with me I could have gone higher. I checked at two sticks and I was at 18'. My mistake was I just went out back so I didn't think I would need gloves. WRONG! When I got three sticks up my hands were frozen. LOL The only problem I could see is you don't want to drop your aider so I'm going to put a carabiner on it and clip it to the bridge when I'm climbing.

Thank you sir. My aider should be in today

Guys be careful - a kickout standing on a stick or stepp is hard enough to self-rescue from - cannot even imagine what it would be like standing on an 4-5 step aider, attached to a loosened stepp or stick with only a lineman's belt - consider slowing down and using a tether as well.

I have used a 6 step aider for two years people seem to think it is risky
I have not had a serious kick out in 2 years.
Technique is important.
1. Foot fully inserted
2. Stay up right with foot pressure down not forward
3. Take your time
4.maintain 3 points of contact with the tree
5. Keep your lineman’s belt tight so you are standing straight up
Practice
Keep a hoist and grappling hook with you in case you drop your aider

I got out there again today. Swapped the 2 in 1 for the linesman with the ropeman. That helped with positioning on the tree. I still find it easier to tie on the WE step solid at eye level, the first time rather than reaching up, which takes me a few attempts to get the step on solid. So I got the tape measure out today as well. Using the knaider/swaider I tie my steps 5' apart. Using the 5 step aider I can get the steps 7' apart. I'm 5'8". I'm usually hunting around 20', 25' on limbless trees, very seldom 30'. At 20' feet I use 4 steps with the K/S. Using the 5 step aider 3 steps to 21'. Net savings to me is one lb. Still fishing around for the foot loops. Not solid on the foot everytime like with the K/S. Not as much on the way up but certainly on the way down, and that's in broad daylight with no pack. Then there's the possibility of dropping the 5 step. Unless you have it tied on it's a possibility. The K/S are attached, no worries about dropping them . Going 30' I'm going to save 2 lbs. A 1 to 2 lb savings isn't going to sell me, considering the trade offs in ease of use and stability. I'm no quitter, so I'm going to keep on with the practice sessions, and see if I can smooth things out.

Out there again today, I do have to say things felt a little more solid. Still not as easy to tie on the step solid the first time reaching overhead. I figured out how to get my feet in the aider steps better. I pick up the step with the top of my foot and roll the toes back and kind of around to the outside before I put weight in the step. This helps work it back into my instep better (which feels more solid). Also switching off between holding the WE step, for balance as I advance my foot up to the next aider step and advancing the linesman after I solidly step up. My next session I think I'm going to do two 30' climbs (actually a 6 step K/S climb and a 4 step aider climb). I'll time it, not that that matters. More for overall ease of use, and overall stability. Of course I'll measure total height for each. One mans journey.
