I agree. I think it's a boot problem. Although, I didn't have a problem with my leather pads. They worked fine. So it's a combination of the boots and my new aluminum pads.

Was it because you could pull the leather straps tighter than these?

I'm using Irish Setter Rutmaster boots. They are not flexible. The uppers are ridgid and don't fold very well underneath the strap. That's why I have to go above the top of the boot to get it tight.
How did the old ones fit over the boots and how did you strap them? Just trying to figure out the differences. Is it just due to the difference in padding?

I think it's because the leathers wrapped around my boots from front and back. The aluminum pad doesn't give, obviously. I think my solution is change my boots, or go back to the leather pads. I'm not buying new boots.

I'd go back to your leather pads and figure it out after the season. I'm not sure why they are so uncomfortable.

My boots don't collapse. They hold their shape at the top. Pretty sure that's the problem.

Probably so. Like Red said, go back to what was working, then figure it out after season.

Well I finally hunted for the first time this afternoon for 4 hours in my DIY saddle. I hunted with my Spurs/gaffs on the whole time. I can say for me that having a nice pair of boots with a steel shank and laces will make a huge difference in comfort. Normal slip on boots like mine in the picture do not have a defined heel and no steel/plastic shank to keep the sole rigid. So the whole time the sturup part of the pushed into my feet causing discomfort. I was using the ameristep grizzly screw in steps which are XL compared to normal screw ins and are definitely a must if you want to hunt with your gaffs on the duration of your hunt. On another note, if you have all leather pads for your gaffs it'll be a good idea to throw some tape (gorilla) in spots where the leather rubs because they're squeaky af when they are properly oiled. Plus plus i wrapped mule tape around the sturrup of the gaffs and trapped over it and it's completely quiet when standing and moving from step to step, just watch the spikes

Took the spurs out again tonight. I don't think I did anything differently, but the climbright aluminum pads did just fine. Last time they hurt really badly.

I was tied in at 28 feet in 4.5 minutes. Can't beat it!
