Live from the tree!

Dang, I don't miss that part of Southern living. In November you are supposed to grab your balaclava before you hunt, not your Thermacell.

I couldn't agree more. I'm a sweaty mess after every hunt. It takes most of the fun right out of the hunt. It doesn't even feel like deer season!!! I'm just a tad sour.

Man, learning how lakes and hills effect thermals is definitely on my to do list. I did some blind run-n-gun based on prevailing wind and once I got down in the little valleys between ridgetops, the winds were all different. Ended up finding some good choke points, but by the time I got into them, I had ruined the approach because of the unexpected wind directions.
I set up on a flat against a creek with minimal tree cover and lots of giant ragweed. It doesn't have any defined trails, but there was a decent concentration of scat. Stretched out my sticks and got up to 23-24 feet. Hope it's high enough.

I envy you guys in spots with good deer densities. Luky if there is 3 deer per square mile here...

Where are you? Maine? Mojave?

Western, massachusetts... can go a week without seeing a deer... ive scouted about a square mile of woods, and found one pile of deer droppings, and one rub, and one scrape...

Odly ive found a ton of moose sign... one area is tore up... 8 piles of moose scat in 10 square foot area, and the rubs are insane...

Well, that's pretty spot failed to produce. Third sit in a row without A sighting.

There are areas in PA like that. They're thousand acre state forests without ag fields within miles. If the land can't support the numbers from a food/water/cover perspective, then you'll find lower populations and carry capacities.

Luckily, I live and hunt in a mountain valley in PA with substantial agriculture and high deer numbers

It's been so freaking hot, the few deer my son and I are seeing are all be for 7:30 am and the woods go dead afterwards.
I have plan to hang out all day Friday near an old river run with the only water but the river itself.
Just maybe it will pay off.

2 more work days til my rut vacation! I won't be out all day every day like I usually am because I have to take the baby to day care and we have a couple other family things planned, but I will be putting as much time in a tree as possible :D

It's a strange thing here. Nobody can explain it... eastern mass loaded with deer, connecticut loaded with deer... 5 minutes into new york and woods are loaded with deer.... something about western mass that we have few deer...

The woods ive been hunting are about 1000 acres. It's public land, but i havnt come across other hunters... found 1 ladder stand.

Thete are agricultural crops around the woods, theres water, there are tons of white oaks... id say at least 80% of the trees are white oak...

In the last two days alone I have found 9 ladder stands... Texas doesn't have a lot of public land per capita, and living in the middle of a 7 million person metroplex definitely doesn't help. I am hoping more years with the antler restrictions will help the population out some.

Antler restrictions are an awesome thing for deer management. PA put restrictions in maybe 10 years ago (not from PA so I'm not sure). There's a statistic like 40-50% of all P&Y and B&C entries for PA have been put in since the restriction.

And then there's deer like this. This deer didn't exist in PA before the restriction or if it did it was a unicorn. This is a picture from someone we know in town. You can see it was from Facebook yesterday- too bad I'm tagged out!!!!

There's a strong possibility of me calling the boss and complaining of a tummy ache on Friday. I'm on vacation next week also.

Antler restrictions are probably to worst thing for deer management. Antler restrictions are only good for antlers.

There are studies out there that suggest otherwise. Please PM information if you know if a study that indicates that it is the worst thing for deer management, because I am always interested in the other perspective. If its just an opinion, then OK everyone's entitled to their own and we disagree.
PM me for follow up or we can start another thread to get opinions from forum members so we don't take over the Live from the Tree thread.
