Wow my mind is blow! are you guys like ex-arbourists or something? This way of hunting out of a saddle with Spurs and rappelling sounds incredible if you are agile enough to do it. I really want to give it a try but I'm going to have to take baby steps in learning all the best gear that will be suitable for me. I can't wait! Any general advice would be great. Although I am going to keep researching on this site too. Thanks guys!

I used to climb poles for cable company, but that was many moons ago.
Using spurs and rappelling isn't as hard as it sounds. But you have to be careful and take it slow while you're learning because it wouldn't be good at all if you were to fall. Practice and practice and always keep your safety in mind

I had zero experience with spikes, just watched a lot of videos and reading on how to use them safely. I'll admit the first time with them was a little scary but after that day I have used them many times with no trouble. Rapelling is really easy, just practice your hookup and everything at ground level and know exactly what you are doing before trying it from 20+ feet. It's really a fun way to hunt!

Yea, just integrate one new thing at a time until you are comfortable with it and then move on to be safe

I went to the sherrill dealer in town to compare some spurs. They didn't have the gecko carbon spikes but they had the aluminum ones. All I can say I'd WOW! Those things were light! We weighed them on the shipping scale he had and they came in at 4.9 lbs for the spurs, pads leather ankle straps and leather protective caps. I wish they had the carbon ones to compare. They seemed alot lighter than the climb rights I looked at a couple weeks ago. And by switching out some of the straps with nylon, I'm sure you could get even lighter. I have to say, I was tempted to give him my credit card right then and there.

Aluminum made by Gecko? My ClimbRights are over 6lbs for both they are made pretty stout. I like them though!

Don't ignore the titanium ones. Lighter than aluminum. Stronger than the aluminum and carbon ones.

any chance on someone making a full length instructional video, on how to climb with spurs without ever becomming unattacted to the tree (ie getting around branches) then how they would rappel down? This is sounding too good to be true. If I would only carry some ropes my bow and a fanny pack I would be in heaven.

Thanks in advance.

I can do that. Which method of repelling would you prefer? I have a grigri and a figure 8 style friction brake, but can also show a drt rappel with just knots if you prefer

Thanks for the fast reply ernie.I watched your video with the linemans rope but had a hard time following as the camera was far away. I will re wtach a few times.

I dont know the difference between a grigri and firgure 8. I guess which ever is fastest and safest. I knew nothing about tree spurs before I cliocked on thsi thread which is now going to cosy me upwards of $500.

Why don't I try and do a few smaller videos with more close ups. I will be starting my own YouTube channel so this will be a good way to start. Three are ways to do it cheaper than that or more expensive..... I just caved and got the gecko cf spikes for a birthday present. I used to be an arbitrary so if you have any questions feel free to ask

I guess a video howing how to make teh linemans rope that had teh dual prussik and carabiners woudl be awesome. I was thinking I was going to have to get a second rope to go around branches.

Also what rope do you descend with? is that a seperate rope then the tree strap? also how do you get the rope down? assume it has to be fastened around teh tree to supprt the desend.

Thanks buddy.

Ive only been hunting a short time. I just finished my 3rd season. I need to become the forest and not be clunking around looking for straight limbless trees sweating buckets.
