Had a rough start this morning, went to an area that I've had good luck with gobbles early on(military base), I know roughly where they roost but not enough to get into a position for fly down.

I started hearing gobbles early and had to move to get closer because they were on the other side of a creek on a small ridge. I circled around and got over there in time to have 3 I think at one point gobbling all around me, I picked one and moved in, quick run and gun setup with the saddle and bow, no blind, oh I did have one hen decoy. As soon as I started calling he shut up! I know I'm not the best caller but I've had some success getting responses. I did hear some hens but oddly enough not in that direction. I waited an hour or so then moved on. At this point the woods were silent. I slowly walked in dispair back to the truck.

Ate a pbj and went back out, setuo on a small ridge and started calling, oh funniest part was right after setting up I broke into a coughing sneezing fit, lol can't believe I saw anything. Clearly you can see I wasn't that pumped with myself at this point. I kept calling working through all of my calls(2 pots and a box, not that confident with the mouth yet and I keep screwing them up, so I didn't have the one I like). Oh I had 2 hen decoys out.

About 30 minutes later, I had a nice tom come in but he hung up around 40 yard, he never said a thing and after a little strutting he slowly walked away. I tried excited yelps and cuts then some purring but he wasn't having any of it. Not sure how far you shotgun hunting folks would take a bird but 40 is def out of my turkey bow range.

I'm curious what you guys would have done in that situation, or have done that works. Oh I was in a blind. I think I might bring some string to move one of the decoys a little.

Thoughts?

Anyway it was a cool hunt, and I can't wait to get back out there!

Man that’s tough. I got Chris’s bird to commit after I did a jake yelp. That got him in fast. Sometimes they go crazy on those and sometimes they shy away. But more often than not you can get even a satellite tom in with a jake yelp.

All cured and on the wall. Decided not to put it on a backing. Didn’t want to take from the colors and it would’ve been heavy as heck to build something that big. Really pleased with how this came out being the first time I’ve done a full cape. I’ve done different fan mounts over the years but I really like this.

That looks great! I've always wanted to try one of those.

Made some ground turkey jerky and knocked it out of the park.

Recipe was pretty simple. Most would have everything already:

Per 1 lb of turkey
⅓ cup brown sugar
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tbsp black pepper
1 tsp kosher salt
¼ tsp morton tender quick cure
1 tbsp oil

Had about 5lbs of trim from legs, thighs, and wings from 1 1/2 birds (this years and half of last years).

Marinated in mixture above for 48 hrs. Would probably cut back on brown sugar to 1/4 cup or less depending on sweetness preference. Still a great base marinade.

Ground up using a finer grinding plate and then rolled to 1/4” thick on a baking pan and then sliced into 1x6” strips. No special equipment needed other than a grinder, though I could see where a “jerky gun” would come in handy to make strips. Kinda had to fuss over them when moving them from pan to grill so they didn’t fall apart. Once smoking no problems.

About 2.5ish hours in the charcoal smoker with some apple wood. Lowest I could keep it was around 200F.

Kids gobbled about half it up before I had a chance to stop them. Wife is asking for more. Guess I done good.

10/10 would make again.

Thanks for the kind words. I try to show Off my accomplishments at home in way that isn’t gotty. My wife isn’t to keen on dead stuff adorning the walls so I turn them into wall art or furniture pieces for the wall.

Mines not as fancy but still love how it turned out! Simple DIY kit you can buy on eBay.

With our season starting last week I got dragged away for work and missed the opening 4 days for the first time since I was 16. Got a nice 22.8lb 10in beard bird this week though. Great hunt too, I don't think any new year begins until turkey hunting starts, and soon the bass will be spawning!

Congrats to all the gets!! and to all the unlucky; thanks for the stories. I feel I should add mine here then. Opening day in NH I had one sneak up under my blind so fast that I could not get a bead on him until he started walking behind my blind… fortunately it was a rare hot morning and I had the door open so I cocked my body over, waited till he passed by and thwap I let fly my arrow and I gave the big beautiful bird a chest shave and took a couple strands off the top of his beard!!! He just bore down and bolted. I should have not tweaked my sights that one last session. I got back into my yard and Realized I went just to far. Haha. That’s ok there are still three times hanging at the farm and I know right where they roost and cross into the safety of the cow field. Soon!

I like that shadow box. I used to like doing fan mounts but I ran out of room quick in the garage so I started using the shotgun shell and putting the beard in it. Id like to do one nice mount of a shadow box some year though

Nice string of beards and fans. That’s my normal display preference also but wanted something special for the shadow box bird. It’s actually the last bird I killed in Tennessee on my grandparents farm. It’s made from cedar. I had to make the crown in it as I couldn’t find Cedar crown to buy. It helps that I really love working with wood and making one off custom furniture pieces for my friends and family. If you’d like I can get the dimensions for what I have so you’ll have an idea of the size needed. I made it so all four sides have the same clearance from any part of the feathers and beard.
