The Best Public-Legal Climbing Method

How many SS needed to get to 20" and have 4 steps left over for a ring of steps at the top to use in place of a platform?
That depends do you want to climb 20 foot or do you want your feet to be at 20 foot at hunting height ? If you could make two foot per step which is approximately what @Nutterbuster was making you would take 10 steps to get 20 ft plus another four for a ring steps so that would be a total of 14. You could shave one by climbing to 18 and another 2' to your ring of steps if you prefer to do it that way.

Thanks! Wow, that adds more evidence for me to never, ever, try multi step aiders. One carry as you go one step aider for me at most. I’d like to go aiderless, but am too heavy for squirrel steps or cranfords and don’t want to carry 6 muddy pro as opposed to 4 of them.
The way Nutterbuster is putting them on the tree with the OCB if you can climb on bolts you can climb on squirrel steps. No need for aider.

So at 20”, u plan on hunting at knee height?

I say u only need the 4 ROS

If 20’, then what denots wrote seems good

I've been using a 3step diy aider for 3seasons now and also cutting some limbs, hanging bat boxes and various other tasks and as long as i keep that 3 point contact i haven't had a slip out. The times i broke the rule is when it'll kick out. If your in shape with good core strength and you keep three contract points (dig your toe in deep) take your time stay attached with your linesmans belt and practice you can use the aiders as safely as any other climbing method. Not sure what that guy in the video was doing but whatever it was he did it wrong

Lots of great stuff here!! I’ll just throw this out there as another option as well. Cranfords with the new Mini Versa Straps. Quick and solid with no buckle at all. Less bulk than the stock Cranford ropes. 9.3 ounces each with an 8' Mini Versa.

I actually did the same thing last year with the dutchware straps Dano was selling. It worked, but I had a tough time getting the step tight to the tree.

That kinda seems to be the running theme with cranfords, unfortunately. Without a buckle, you can't get them tight enough so that they will consistently stay tight to the tree. Add a buckle to the system, and the weight adds up quickly.

But, with that setup you are saving about $7-8 per step. More if you buy the cranfords folks are currently unloading in the classifieds.

I placed an order yesterday then sold everything that wasn't in use to help fund the impulse purchase. All I have left to sell are a couple teenagers. 15 and 17. They are in fairly good shape, they eat a lot, tend to roll their eyes when asked to do something. I will let them go for a fair price.

Have they had their shots?

Been spayed/neutered?

Dewormed?

Do they tree well?

Will they run deer?

Got papers on 'em?

Tell ya what, write me a check for two grand, and I'll rehome 'em for ya. ;)

Can they chop wood and mow a lawn?

Really? Now you tell me - we could have worked out a trade. There's a machine shop in need of some squirrels to keep the machines going.

Since this thread has already gone down a rabbit hole. @Nutterbuster send me your address cause $2,000 is a steal to re-home my teenagers. This literally just happened

Totally your fault for not buying a new Mercedes with collision prevention built in.
