8mm Oplux questions & uses

This is 35 ft with figure 8 for rappelling, a 7 ft linesman and 7 ft tether with figure 8s, 3 caribiners, Ropeman 1, and a Madrock Safeguard in there together. Oh yea, and a sewn loop tubular tether with an Austrialpin release buckle. Didn't put them in, but my knaider/swaider will also fit on top. This Oplux is truly awesome! The ES will hold even more.

Definitely not putting my 40’ Sterling HTP SRT rope and Tethrd lineman’s belt and tether in a single SYS hauler! That’s pretty small!

I ordered. 60 cm jammy as I was unsure how long a length I needed. It was more than enough to cut the sewn ends off and make a distel hitch with. I cut off a DanO tender and used it for tending.

This is way smaller in weight and volume than 11mm and 8mm. See my thread about oplux and no kong duck for some more pics.

I also found that using the jammy with the sewn loop for a klemheist was not to my liking. It did not dress as well as a distel and the length of the sewn area was pretty long. That meant that there was more “loss” of tended distance after tending in.

I like the setup I have as there really is very minimal loss of tended distance. For those who don’t understand what I a saying, a ropeman will catch immediately after tended in. Zero loss of tended distance. With a tender, there is a short distance before the tender actually starts pushing the friction hitch up the rope. When done tending, that length comes back as loss of tended distance after tending in the rope.

This loss is determined by the length of tender used and the length of the friction hitch ends that connect to carabiner. (from biner to friction hitch). I try to keep that minimal to have the best experience with using a tender.

I will never go back to ropeman or purchase a kong for the purposes of lb or tether.

And last thought for now, @DanO is the man-o.

I purchased the oplux and tenders from him. I would have also purchased the jammy from him, but was unsure if the length he had would be long enough. Jammy comes in 35, 50 and 60 length. It looked like he had 35 length for sale. If/when DanO has all lengths of jammy available, he’d be the one stop shopping for this.

And DanO cut my two ropes to the length I had specified. I did send him a message here after the order requesting my length be cut into two ropes. Easy peasy!

how long did you order the 8mm pieces for tether and LMB?

Is beal jammy material available in bulk and in other colours? I looked through the beal website but could not determine the exact material they use in the jammy??
Thanks

I ordered two pieces, 17’ each. This is more that most people use.

I figure that I am using versa straps for maximum circumference of tree of 8’, add in the extra length I use to connect my tether to hook into my bridge, then add more for backup to my RCH belay loop with an alpine butterfly knot. And a little more for the figure 8 and stopper knot.

The thread I started on oplux and no kong duck has pics of how I backup (pre oplux/jammy) if you are interested.

Realistically, I most likely will not use that full length. However it is so small that having it daisy chained is no biggie. And I just may run into a tree with 8’ circumference (approx 30.55” diameter tree) that I feel I need to get into.

Just 35, 50 and 60 for lengths. Not sure if different lengths have different colors or not.

@Squirrels what length of jammy are you using for the autoblock?
The shortest one. The others would be to long I think. I do like the 50 or 60 for a friction hitch on a tether or LB, cut of the stitched section and tie it in a distel as tight as possible (without a lot of extra hanging below the hitch) easier to tend that way.

Thought this reply from Madrock may be useful. I asked about using 8mm OpLux with the Safeguard. Decipher this however you wish. Actual reply below:

“Sorry for the delayed response. Our manufacturers suggested rope diameter for this device does not cover the 8mm rope that you're inquiring about.

However, there have been outside demonstrations done on Youtube that show our Lifeguard belay device with a Sterling 8mm Canyon Lux rope. Both the Lifeguard and Safeguard share almost identical construction (the Safeguard does not have a spring in the device).

Perhaps this might help with your inquiry.

Cheers,”

Anyone using this for SRT? My only remaining concern is damage caused by my Petzl ascender over time. The OpLux looks like it has a softer outer sheath than the 9mm HTP but I haven’t seen it in person. Technically you can ascend with friction hitches but not as efficiently.
