Trotlines

Storm blowing through slowed my roll with the lines. But today I went out and set 15 limb lines with the bait @Sipsey gave me. Caught one little blue cat (under a pound) before I had all the lines set. Found out that Sudden Impact punch bait is absolute trash. Won't stay on a treble hook at all. More like a dip bait than a punch bait.

I've never fished this place before but it's very similar to a honey hole I've had good luck on. Shallow (5ft max) oxbow bend off a big river. Thinking they'll lay up in the timber and holes in the big river during the days and hunt in the shallows ar night. That's the thought, anyway. Hopefully tomorrow I'll see some tree-shakers out there!

I’ve got one or two more days of chain sawing on my little stream to open upriver. My cousin and I bass fish and hunt this upper stretch and every year new trees come to rest across it. We had three saws hung up at one point the other day. We got us a wedge (Axe) this round. We heading out shortly and ill get some more hooks out next week. Good luck with that strip bait.

We ran about 50 bank poles last night- I am whooped. Caught about 20 flatheads. We threw back all the big mommas with eggs.
 
So aside from the blue cat last night, notta. I didn't get around to checking them until 9am though, so they sat a little longer than I like. Don't think anybody ran them for me though. The area doesn't see much traffic and there were only 2 trucks at the ramp when we got there. No bait on the lines. Not sure if it dissolved or was stolen. Something did bend a 3/0 gamakatsu.

I may buy some more, just because it's mighty convenient to prebait the limb lines with it.

The saltwater variant of the Gamakatsu circle hooks in 4/0-7/0 was perfect for my lines in central Missouri a few years back. I used mason's nylon on the main and then mono or braid on the drops. They were expensive upfront, but have lasted nearly a decade with minimal tarnish or rust. Hit them with a hook file once or twice a season and they are money. Another option is putting a swivel on the trotline and then re-crimping it onto the hook eye. This also helps eliminate line twist and fatigue that can occur if you get a gar or flathead that wants to roll the line.
 
The kiddos backed out. They just want to play video games all night. Darn shame.

Shoulda hit me up Monday, I played hooky to go trout fishing and we got skunked. Now I gotta work 10s to make up for Monday haha. No love love for the weekend warriors!

I rather not fish with the other weekend warriors. I cringe everytime I see another boat on the water or another person walking in the woods. It’s pretty much impossible nowadays but I like to minimize it the best I can. Night fishing, I’m usually alone. That’s why I like running noodles at night.
 
Damn, I wish you were closer. It’s good to have someone you know that can and will go with you on a moment’s notice.

What are you using for bait? I’d like to catch some of those to use as bait.
Trying to get a whopper before I throw in the towel for the year.
