Post season workout encouragement thread! 2022 EDITION!!!!!

Question for the real runners out there: What works for you to increase your speed/lengthen your stride/make you more efficient. I am doing ok on my plan for adding mileage (did 8.5 miles last run) but my pace is much slower than it used to be. Obviously I am older, I never was fast, and it is still March but I just feel like I am shuffling more than running. Anything other than hill-sprints or sprint intervals that helped you?

Idk if I’m a real runner but I enjoy it and try to run several half marathons or trail races each year. I try to stay around the 8 minute mile for half marathons but have PR’d with a 1:40 half marathon and 18 minute 5K. I know thats not a record breaking pace but it’s fairly quick for most casual runners. You may be a lot faster than that, and if so, ignore my advice.

The first thing you should do is increase flexibility. This is HUGE. Stretch stretch stretch. This will add some speed as you’ll get better turnover when your fatigued and more efficient stride length without overstriding.

And your spot on about hills and sprints. But these need to be a sustained effort. Short efforts are good but to translate to longer distances you need to make longer efforts. So instead of sprinting 100% a 1/4 mile hill, find a really hilly route or trail and run a very hard pace for 2-3 miles. Rinse and repeat. Same thing with intervals. Don’t just run 1/4 or 1/2 Miles. Those are great but you should throw in some 1 and 2 Mile efforts to build that sustainable speed. “Progression” runs are also great for building speed when you’re tired. In these runs every mile is faster than the last.

I try to do 1 purely speed workout a week. Just finished mine for this week actually. Nothing crazy, just a 3 mile progression run. 1st mile at a fast but comfortable pace, 2nd mile is faster and not comfortable, 3rd mile is even faster and the last portion your legs should be burning and it should be painful.

Hope this helps! Keep grinding and stay positive!

Keep it up everyone, I'm continuing to struggle. Crappy personal life and self sabotage and all that. Sitting on the couch because I'm upset instead of going for a run to change my feelings. Posting publicly because well... I haven't tried that before and here's to transparency. Back on the wagon (again), me...

I'm also an asics fan, been running in kayanos since they were in the single digit versions but always wonder if I should try some other brands. Have always heard good things about brooks. Keep going back to the kayanos because if it ain't broke don't fix it but at 150+ a pair they ain't cheap. I try to buy the last seasons ugly colors on sale because I don't care what they look like, but wasn't able to find much this go around when my neon green/tennis ball color ones wore out.
Hey man, no worries and no judgement. We all have those days. I have to remind myself that working out and running isn’t the hard part, being CONSISTENT is the hard part. So hang in there.

That being said, I don’t feel sorry for you. Get up and go run! No excuses. You are your own biggest obstacle. When I’m in the same mood you are I like what Cam Hanes says, “No one cares, work harder”.

So I hope you get out there and get after it bud!

Thanks for the feedback, @KYHunter. I was pretty sure I was slower than you and I have only run 10 miles twice in my life. My goal used to be to stay under 9 minutes per mile which I could do consistently up to 5 miles in previous years. This year I've been at a 9:30 pace and slower on the hills and I have been working harder to do that. I figured it was time to starting mixing in some type of speed workout.

Right on, seems like you’re one the right track. Hope you’re enjoying the work!

As long as you get back on that horse...I have struggled too but at this point I'd rather do my workout than feel ****ty about not doing it all day. Some days it is tough to work it into my schedule if i miss the morning window. This time change has not helped, but luckily work is still slow, but that will change next week.

I have developed horrible tennis elbow in both arms from chain sawing last yr and splitting. I rebuilt a concept model C rower which I really like but right now its idle and I'm walking 5 miles fast up and down 10 stories till I get this under control. 6' 200lbs. Would like to be 180 but that's a tough goal. I already eat great home grown foods and have not gotten the VID yet. Don't plan on the vac till more data is out.

Running and exercise in general has this weird way of taking that negative energy and harnessing it into something good. I get so much of my psycho rage out when I’m pushing for one more push up or doing one more jump or finishing a run strong. Just gotta get back out there and get back into that rhythm. You know you have it in you.

@KYHunter very true, and your reply is spot on, I wasn't seeking any pity just trying a new tactic to motivate myself and you and @SaddleUpPartner! both hit the nail on the head. Just got done with a 4 mile run and feel much better all around. Now to get back to building consistency. Thanks for the kick in the arse and keep it up everyone!

Way to go man! Glad you got out and got a run in! Keep grinding!

Yeah. Whatever works for you to find motivation. Accountability and encouragement makes a difference. I remember when P90X was big a bunch of us in our office were doing it at the same time. Made it more fun and helped to motivate me to keep going. So I am glad @SaddleUpPartner! started this thread focusing on positive encouragement and ideas for anyone interested in joining in. Great job!

Now if we can just get him to find a better avatar ...

The avatar stays haha! I needed to find something both MSU and archery related so I snagged the MSU archery team logo. Thought it looked cool. I currently work for MSU as well so I’m a big Spartan fan.
To your point about starting this thread, yes having the accountability helps immensely. It helps myself stay motivated and helps keep others going as well. I’m glad it caught on, I honestly thought it would have fizzled out by now lol.

Insanity Asylum game day + overtime is painful. This is my second time doing game day and they add this extra 12 minute thing on there called OT. Holy. CRAP! Game day is already an hour long and there isn’t a ton of breaks. I’m still on schedule for the running portion of this 3 phase plan. How’s everyone else doing? Snow is all gone so hopefully everyone has been out scouting like crazy. Keep it up, dudes!

When you start saying Tony's lines before he does then you'll know you are doing P90X. "The mother of all workouts." "Breath. Breath harder."

Trails dried out enough for me to mtn bike on Tues. Immediately caught stump with my pedal that stopped the bike but not the rider. Fortunately the ground is soft this time of year. Took Wed off then decided to go on an easy run last night since I was still hurting a bit. Ended up going a slow 10 miles. Now the old bones are really hurting.

I am keeping up with my workout, the prep. I will graduate soon to the work. I have not had the bike out yet as there is still a lot of salty dust on the roads.
I am proud of my pushups i used to really suck at them, could hardly do any. Now i can do a good amount with decent form. It is nice to see improvement.

I augered in at speed last year and was stopped immediately by catching my bicep in a forked broken tree limb. It turned last years P90 into P78. Its always the quick stop ones that get you. This year I'll hopefully keep it rubber side down.

A torn meniscus dogging me combined with Covid causing my company to put me on work form home status permanently has put a SERIOUS hurt on my fitness/waist line!

As such, i took advantage of Noom which was free as my company paid for it. I DO NOT normally believe in these types of things but figured id try it as my ability to exercise has been hampered. Lost 7 lbs on it in two weeks already so im rather surprised. Appears to work if you engage with it as it gives you a sense of accountability and mindfulness to what your eating and doing every day.

Hopefully losing weight will help with the knee thing and can get back to my normal activities/fitness by next season, good luck to all in a similar boat.
