Bad thing was, I was 189 lbs back in February…Lay off the doughnuts or you'll become the Fl Canopy BLOCKER...
@zolson - as I mentioned above, I like this idea and noodled it some previously but don't feel like I have the equipment to do it right. What I *think* needs to happen is that the button on the right side needs to be cut off and replaced with a wedge that the cam cleat mounts to in order to ensure that the rope attaches at the same angle as originally intended. I'm talking about the area circled in red below...

Of course, once that button is cutoff, there's no going back!
As it is, the solo scout with the stock cam strap is a viable no-stick climbing method that I have used a number of times. With a cam cleat to make attachment faster and easier, it could possibly be even better - the 2 things I'm unsure about are:
1. To get the cam-over effect, you need the right tension - is it easier to adjust tension with the cam buckle or with the cam cleat where you have to remove the rope completely to reset? Warrants testing.
2. I attach 2 slotted squirrel steps to my cam strap once I reach height - will those still work ok with the attachment rope instead of the strap?
Oh, man, that would be cool! You chop yours down first . The "once it's gone" thing will keep me from trying it I think, coupled with my no metal-working skills. One thing I wondered about as I was thinking of cam cleat placement is where I put my feet. I think if it was near the opposite post where you indicated, I might be more likely to kick or toe it? I spend some portion of my time with my instep on the posts normally. I'd kind of want the cam cleat to be well clear of my boots, if I could have it all.
I hear you about it functioning as a climbing platform without the cam cleat. I thought it worked fine with just a daisy chain, but the lure of the cam cleat is strong
Boy, I don't think so, at least how I set it with the rope angled up. So, that's another strike against the idea.
Ha! Yeah, I don’t want to chop mine! Hoping Matt or someone from OOAL will see this and try it for us!!!
I love the cam cleat on my mini-stick for 1-sticking but I’m not 100% sure it would help on a cam-over platform like the solo scout. Need a brave soul to try it.
Not enough room to mount the cam below the step.
Yeah. Thats where I wanted it to go originally, because I do think there's enough space. That would solve any safety concerns I think. But I assumed (did not try or test) that the angles involved would make the scout cant harder because the attachment points would get pretty asymmetrical. Might be something to try, though!
So....if u were to deign, from scratch, an aider with climbing it's intended purpose what are u looking for?
Most aiders from what I can tell are designed to be used in conjunction with a stick/step or some other piece of equipment......im thinking building an aider with a standoff built in that is designed to be used all by itself...
I tried something similar to that. Can’t wait to hear your resultsMost aiders from what I can tell are designed to be used in conjunction with a stick/step or some other piece of equipment......im thinking building an aider with a standoff built in that is designed to be used all by itself...
