Pistol hunters?

Any handgun hunters here? I picked up a 7.5” SBH a little over a year ago, got some decent shooting loads built up, and and pretty confident with it at bow ranges. Didn’t get the chance to hunt with it last year, so I’m planning on tipping a few over with it this season. First time I climbed up in my saddle a couple of months ago, the first thing that popped into my mind was that you basically have a built in shooting rest from your bridge/tether.

Used them pretty much exclusively for years, but not out of a saddle. Our county just legalized rifles/handguns for deer last year, with the caveat of at least 10' elevation. I did a little late season from the saddle and it worked fine; used a shoulder holster. I'm not sure I'd want a SBH cylinder gap any where near my tether/bridge, though.

Well, I’m guessing that the cylinder gap would be a good 8” or more from the bridge if I’m resting my forearms on them.

Killed a doe out of my saddle last year with my pistol. Will definitely be trying the same this year. It was pretty awesome! Ruger GP100 5” with a vortex venom red dot on it .357 magnum

I've been wanting to try it. I don't plan to be elevated, though. I plan to take my turkey chair and go into some thick spots like bedding areas where there are no trees big enough to climb. I plan to find a well worn trail, go down it a way and then go off at a 90 degree angle and get off the trail about 10 yards and set up with the wind in my favor. I can brace off my knees and get a very solid rest. I should be able to hear any deer coming down the trail and be able to get ready.

I'd like to slip one of these Keith SWC HP's into the shoulder of a deer at about 10 yards or less.

May try it with my 9mm this year. If a 9mm will blow the lungs completely out of a human, it figure it will work ok on a deer or hog at close range.

My dad's hunting mentor had a similar thought process and killed more deer than CWD. He had a .44mag with an 8" barrel, scope, trigger job, the works. He also had a 9mm glock well before most LA rednecks wanted some Australian Tupperware gun. Smart guy.

He basically said if you could shoot it accurately at bow range, it would kill a man or a deer at that distance. I was at the skinning shed to witness at least 2 does that died of a 20-30 yard 9mm round. Open sights. Just his snake gun.

I see no reason why anyone who would depend on a 9mm with good quality HP to stop a 220-pound psychotic biped would have any qualms about its ability to take down a 90-pound placid doe with a well-placed shot. Should work just fine.

I shot a TC Contender pistol in .35 Rem last year. Kicked much more than a 9mm Lungblower but I was also ringing steel at 200 yards with it. If I was hunting close cover around ag fields or power lines I think this would be a tough gun to beat.

I will be trying my my tc contender in 357 max, it is a tack driver. It’s a 10” Ssk barrel with an ultradot matchdot. It will be pretty handy punching though the public land brush.

I carry an S&W 28-2, although at this point it's more of tradition or a good luck charm than something I intend to shoot... but I have put down a spine-shot deer, and headshot a couple of grouse with it. I guess the grouse tick the 'pistol hunter' box, although I wouldn't claim that to Elmer Keith...

Also, last season I carried a 10mm 1911 on a chest rig then switched to SW new 10mm 4.5 pistol. Never got to take one and was disappointed. Switched to Redhawk 44mag for this year.

I did shoot a coyote once while out scouting preseason on that old lease. I was studying a deer trail that crossed a ridge top in a thinned pine stand when I heard a commotion from the north. I soon realized that a doe was headed straight toward me along that trail and was being followed by a coyote. They were trotting, not running. They dipped down into a shallow draw and I eased back about 12 yards and stood behind a pine tree and took a 44 special single action out of its holster and thumbed back the hammer. Shortly the doe crossed right in front of me and soon thereafter the coyote made his appearance. I gave him a 240 grain Keith semi wadcutter backed by 7 1/2 grains of Unique square in the shoulder. The good old Skeeter Skelton load worked like a charm.

Hell yea!! Nice revolver. I searched for mine for a while. I happened to find it like the same week the person sold it to the store. Best I've done was a 2 shot group, 2.5" at 130yds. They're damn fine revolvers.

I was in the shop when the guy walked in to sell it. Said he just wanted it out of his house. Shop owner knew I wanted it so he got it from the guy. $600 and some paperwork and I had a new toy. It was two weeks after I found a 1973 44 mag Ruger Super Blackhawk 3 screw in great condition. Plan was to hunt with the Blackhawk and then the Redhawk came into my life so the cowboy deal became a safe queen.

686 Deluxe 7” 357mag. I’ve killed handful of hogs with it but never had a crack at deer with it. I also killed a sow and all her little ones with my Ruger 1911 .45. They wouldn’t leave her so I kept blasting.
