Team 6

Looks like a bit of a cold front moving in before the storms hit here. Going to drop the kids off in the morning tomorrow and then get in a tree and see if something with antlers isn’t out and about. Managed to get Grandma lined up to handle school pickup if I’m seeing much movement or having good luck so that helps. Put another Ropeman on tonight on my tether (I’ve just been running one on my lineman belt to get up and down) and tested it in my yard. I’d be the dummy to put it on backwards and be switching it out at the base of the tree if I didn’t. Daughter helped me pack snacks; I’ll take some out after she goes to bed, apparently she was worried I’d starve to death so half the pantry is in my pack right now. First time I’ve ever really archery hunted first week of November in Iowa so I apologize for too many team posts and the over excitement.

I had a rough day today hunting. It’s a real tough place to get into, almost a mile thru swamp and thick undergrowth but lots of deer sign. Today was my 4 day that I have hunted it this season and so far I have seen 3 legal bucks in those 4 sits on including one today(part of my bad day) all within 40 yards. It’s over an hour drive and bad fog got me there later than planned and when I got to where I planned to hunt there was a fella in a tree about 100 yards before my spot, still far enough away in this area it didn’t matter but I couldn’t figure out how he got in there with no cars when I parked. He ended up walking out around noon in the other direction which is almost 2 miles to avoid the swamp…. Maybe he is smarter than me. I got to my tree and realized my leg loops fell off along the way in… I went up anyway and when I got situated, bow hanging and I went to hang my pack and heard tink… my arrow fell out of my bow to the ground. Frustrated, I knocked another arrow and reached for my bag and hear, tink. Another arrow at the bottom of the tree. Finally settled down and about an hour in two doe come running thru, I had time to look that direction, see the doe, look around my tree and see the buck following. Had my bow in hand and watched the doe walk past the tree I marked at 25 yards and got ready for the buck to do the same. He came right down the line and I drew and had a branch in my way so I squatted a bit to take the shot and launched it right over his back. He never even noticed the arrow go by and headed after the doe. Trying to figure out what I did wrong I replayed it before I got down when I squatted the bottom of my bow hits my tether pushing the bottom limb out which throws my arrow angle up….
Now that I have all my bad luck out of the way I am planning all day sits in there the next three days. Hopefully they keep crushing thru there and I get another opportunity.

Didn’t do my part this morning. While I was getting my stuff ready to put in my car at 530 I had a customer call with an issue. Tossed my stuff in the car and talked with him on the drive up pulling off a few times to look up some info. Thru the long drive up we got it figured out and I showed up about 20 min after the sun came up. Jumped out to grab my stuff to walk in and realized I left my bow at home…. So much for an all day sit and made the drive home. On another note, my wife said she saw two different 8 points walk past my stand in our orchard out back while I was gone and asked why I am driving so far when there are deer here. Insult to injury.

You should go set the pepper shaker next to her. ;)

Walked out to load the truck this morning and had a doe in my yard. Drove 30 to 35mph to my hunting area, fog. Seen a nice 10 about 2 miles from my house. Got set up using my Transformer and a old ladder stand. Standing on the seat, facing the tree. Not a single deer. On stand 4 hours. t's 70 today and getting warmer. Gun hunting the same public this weekend, draw hunt. Going to hit 75 Sunday.
Hope you guys are not counting on me, LOL.

It has been so hot and so dry for so long here that the gar have ticks and you cant find a skeeter in the river bottoms. But it finally rained good last weekend and is supposed to drop another couple inches friday night so I am sure the skeeters at least will make a strong come back.

Love to tell you guys we’re catching up in the standings with the Booner I put down today but I didn’t see a deer. Not even a tail flick where I couldn’t see the head but could tell just by the waggle that it would’ve been a monster if it just came my way. Little tired from a fairly long walk in, lot of burrs on the clothes, and a satisfied feeling from a long sit even if it wasn’t successful in the killed a deer manner. Busting out the rain gear and getting ready to grind again tomorrow, not going to get one from my recliner in front of the tv!

I am more than pumped for a weekend of hunting. This will only be my third time out this season, shameful!!! That trip to Germany and Mallorca cut into my hunting big time, but now I will catch up. Buck or doe are not safe if they come to close.

Been relatively light for me so far as well as far as actual hunting. After this weekend though, I will be hunting 14 of the next 30 days weather permitting. I keep thinking the weather is going to get right at some point.

Man I am pumped. Took this fella at 30 yards with my new longbow. About a mile back in on public land in some of the nastiest swamp you can dream of. He went about two steps and fell over and started kicking. Centered a rib and cut thru it clean and deflected it up into the cavity and took the top of the lungs out if him.

Probably not normal and I’m sure frowned upon this week, but I think I just need a morning/day off. I’m gonna take my wife and kids out to breakfast in the morning and then make a call from there if I go out tomorrow. I really wanna get my first archery buck and I sure love being in the woods and I know this is the best week but I’m just feeling like I’ve been hard at it for a month and if I don’t put some balance in it’ll cost me later. Like I said, probably weird and frowned upon but I’m just feeling like I want to spend a Saturday morning with my kids eating some diner pancakes and trying to navigate through a maze on a menu with a crayon.

It would be weird or frowned upon if you were deciding to put hunting ahead of that plan. Sounds like a successful morning already.

Thanks for the encouragement and advice all. Ended up taking yesterday more or less off and just spent family time. Did the breakfast thing, some light scouting with my son, took my daughter out to bass pro to see Santa arrive while my wife and son went to church. Felt rejuvenated today and spent about 8 hours in the tree. Saw 2 bucks, 1 small 6 point about 15 yards with plenty of shot opportunities but decided to let him walk, just took a little video, and one that never got closer than 75 yards through some thick cover, looked like a decent one but I’m sure we all like to think that when they don’t come in. Felt much more gratitude for the time out there! Cold front coming in next weekend and they really seem to be chasing now, be ready to be back at it next weekend.

My weekend went nothing at all like I had it planned. We had a front pushing through friday night and they had said there could be some strong thunderstorms. At 1am my phone goes off and it is a tornado warning that the old mobile home we use as deer camp was right in the center of the track. Neighbor trailer across the road has a fraidy hole (storm shelter). I throw on some clothes and my rain jacket and just get in the shelter about the time it gets nasty. Thankfully it wasnt on the ground just a radar signature. Stayed there until about 2:45 waiting for the monsoon to let up and finally gave up and just went back to my trailer. Managed to get back to sleep about 5 but remembered to turn the alarm off that was set for 5:30 lol. Got up about 7:30 and took off to the woods. Was planning to go in and check 2 spots close to each other and hang the one that looked the best. They both were void of anything remotely hunt worthy so the morning turned into a scouting mission. By 2:45 pm I had covered a little over 8 miles but finally found what I have been looking for. Decided yesterday morning that there were only a few other areas of interest I had not looked at yet and rather hang just went and finished up my scouting. Found another couple of prime locations too. By far the most productive scouting of the year. I dont really expect to need to do any other scouting until maybe late season but I mostly already know several late season primary food sources. On public ground I have bee in the woods 9 days and only have one afternoon hang, the rest has all been hiking and looking. We'll see if if the strategy this year pays off.
