Taking tomorrow and possibly Friday off from work, the last two days of Bow here in NY before the guns come out. I can still use the bow during gun season but the deer get awfully jumpy once the pumpkin army trudged through the woods.

Sorry gents, I’ve had a tougher season than normal. Struck out on my rut trip to Ohio (which is unlike me). But finally got a doe down here in PA.

Mandatory work Saturday for me yesterday and decided to take the boy and new pup out to stomp around for a pheasant today. First trip out for both of them (son just turned 7 and pup is just 6 months) so it was more about the walk in the outdoors than the birds. Got back about 4 hours ago and I’m now pretty certain that is what it’s always supposed to be about. 495D99FB-56CD-4EDC-9353-8199749BB08E.jpeg

I didnt think it was possible to have another season as bad as last year but this one is shaping up that way. I swear I think I have a deflector shield around any tree I climb. Saw 20 something from the tree this weekend and had 7 inside 30 and I have yet to put tension on the string. Even had the trees helping save the deer. Had a big doe at 20 but there was a limb in the way. 2 more steps the direction she was heading and she would have been 17 and wide open. But while she was stopped there licking her side, the piece of limb about 24" long fell out of the tree and missed her head less than a foot. She whirled, ran out to about 50 and looked around like what the crap.

Only good news is the mature bucks are getting on their feet in daylight but I expect they will almost give me a shot and walk off some random direction for no apparent reason too. The next 2 weeks are prime time for the area I am hunting and I am on deer. Maybe one will screw up and get right. If not, I am likely to need counseling lol.

The big one got away. Three day ML quota hunt, 18, 19 & 20th. No deer movement Friday and Saturday morning. Moved to where I seen Mr Big on the 12th. At 8am, out comes two does moving fast into the field crossing. Behind her was Mr Big. I was on the edge of the field behind two big trees. Instead of the doe crossing the 75 yards going west through the funnel she stopped in the middle of the field, turned right heading north going 290 yards as fast as possible with Mr Big tailing behind. I did not see the turn because of the big tree. When I realized what happened the buck was 75 yards away and going full speed. I decided not to take the shot and watched him go by the tree I have hunted three times before. I never said I was lucky. About 30min later a 10 point walked out from the same spot. A easy 40 yard shot.
With the slim chance Mr Big could return, I let the 10 point walk.
I may go back in Dec. and hunt the second rut.

Who knows how to disable a deer deflector shield? I have never had a season like this and it is about to make me mental. This past weekend, 21 deer seen from the tree, 5 deer inside 20, 3 I dont think I could have killed with buckshot and the other 2 both non-legal bucks. Saw three no doubt shooters between 45 and 60 yards. 2 of those were on trails which should have brought them by between 15-17 in the open and for no apparent reason they just veered off.

Edit: I just went back and looked at my last post. Freaking called it bigger than crap. With that in mind, next trip one is going to walk in and stick it's ribs out at about 16 steps and catch a sharp ass broadhead in the riblets.

That's bowhunting for ya. I wasn't able to connect a few weeks ago I had three does closer than 20 yds in the a.m. and three in the p.m. Crazy how much has to go right to get a good shot.
Your chances of scoring go up though, that's how I look at hunts with nothing tangible to show for.

I have had some years where I didnt have many tags filled by this point but it was because I was being uber selective on bucks and passing doe's. I have shot at and killed a doe because that has been the only opportunity. I am like 60+ deer seen from the tree 60 yards and in and one shot opportunity. This is so far from normal it doesnt even make sense.
