Team 6

My weekend went nothing at all like I had it planned. We had a front pushing through friday night and they had said there could be some strong thunderstorms. At 1am my phone goes off and it is a tornado warning that the old mobile home we use as deer camp was right in the center of the track. Neighbor trailer across the road has a fraidy hole (storm shelter). I throw on some clothes and my rain jacket and just get in the shelter about the time it gets nasty. Thankfully it wasnt on the ground just a radar signature. Stayed there until about 2:45 waiting for the monsoon to let up and finally gave up and just went back to my trailer. Managed to get back to sleep about 5 but remembered to turn the alarm off that was set for 5:30 lol. Got up about 7:30 and took off to the woods. Was planning to go in and check 2 spots close to each other and hang the one that looked the best. They both were void of anything remotely hunt worthy so the morning turned into a scouting mission. By 2:45 pm I had covered a little over 8 miles but finally found what I have been looking for. Decided yesterday morning that there were only a few other areas of interest I had not looked at yet and rather hang just went and finished up my scouting. Found another couple of prime locations too. By far the most productive scouting of the year. I dont really expect to need to do any other scouting until maybe late season but I mostly already know several late season primary food sources. On public ground I have bee in the woods 9 days and only have one afternoon hang, the rest has all been hiking and looking. We'll see if if the strategy this year pays off.
You hunt the Sardis area? I heard that area was hit during the storms

No I was in a different area. Saw this morning there were 5 confirmed tornado's from that system Friday night. The one that came over where I was never got on the ground but I didnt much want to risk riding it out in a 1972 model trailer, lol.

Smart move! Nothing to play around with in the dark! I was glad we didn’t get any storm damage here in Cato

I sat in a thermal hub this a.m. but nuttin there. Then saw a doe group crossing the road right by my house and I stalked them, got to 30 and was gonna get a little closer but the lead doe busted me. Then I circled around and got to sneak up again,in a hay field that had a strip of goldenrod in the middle. Got to 20 this time but couldn't shoot through the weeds. The lead doe stepped through and I needed her to take one more step but she saw me and high tailed it.

Spot and stalking can be so much fun! I did this in a light wind after a good rain the other day. My dad doesn’t get around to well but I found an easy place for him to get into and dropped him off and headed to a new spot. The wind was swirling and I figured any deer I would see would be headed to my dad anyway so I went for a walk. Covered about 2 miles thru the day and never saw deer but did get within 30 yards of some turkey and was trying real hard to get in for a shot but too many eyes and I was spotted. I much prefer sneaking around than sitting in a tree. I get bored to easily sitting still.

I had a fun hunt yesterday. What I thought was a spike came in and made a rub 60 ydd from me. Upon closer inspection he turned out to be a six. I figured he gets a pass but wanted to Plat with him and grunted, which about never works for me. He ended up coming in and giving me a 10 yd broadside shot. I was very tempted but am holding out for something bigger. He eventually caught my ground scent and took off. He ran does all over the place though, I was watching him for close to an hour. Just before dark I heard steps in the woods but the deer never came out.
I hope I don't regret passing up an easy shot.

Hunted this morning, just after daylight I had 3 does come running in on their bellies with 3 bucks behind them. 2 bucks were youngsters, the other was probably a 3 year old and a shooter to most. They came by and stop at 25 yards for a few seconds, long enough to get a shot off, but I passed. I know there are a few better bucks in the area, but it was tempting lol. Great time of year to be in the woods.

Wow,here in central NY that would be a trophy. I would not have hesitated for a second. It is rough when they tempt you,at least it was short for you, lol.

It has been too hot here in KY. Hunted a quota gun hunt last weekend. Temps in the 70's. Got bit by a mosquito on Nov 6th. Did not see a single deer.
Going west Friday for a 9 day hunt with three days on the end, a quota ML hunt.
Going to get cold, cold, cold.
This is my best chance to get team 6 some points.

4 day weekend to see what I can do starting Friday. 70 degrees here in Iowa today and about that tomorrow but it drops into the 30’s for a high Friday-Monday. Going to layer up and see what happens.
It was 83 here yesterday. Saturday may not make it out of the 40's. Woohoo!! Time to hang and slang!!

15-25 mph N/NW winds tomorrow with higher gusts and 25-30 degrees. Bundle up buttercup, beautiful day to be in a tree during the rut.

First time for a legit all day sit for me in a saddle. Not sore at all and was actually comfortable all day. That wind and first real cold of the year was somethin though. Passed on an 11 point (the spike variety) at 6 yards 3-4 minutes after I got in the tree just after legal light. Had a small 8 wander through. At 55 yards he took a different path and headed away from me. Perked up for a grunt and wheeze but had other things in mind and kept on his way. Had a decent buck absolutely blow by me at 10-15 yards. I don’t know what spooked him to begin with but he was on a dead run already when I could first see him at 150 yards or so headed straight for me and he wasn’t stopping for nothin. I could’ve laid out spike strips and I don’t think he would’ve got a flat for another mile down the road. Only doe I saw was sunset, little over 100 out from me. Pretty sure she winded me, just wandered off. Had a flock of turkeys that kept going in and out of the woods and then into the bean field that was on one side of me and then back into the woods always between 50-100 yards for about 3 hours; that kept me entertained for a long while.
Wish I could’ve gotten a buck on the ground and I’ll keep trying but that might be the most successful day I’ve ever had without getting a deer. Saw a bunch of cool stuff, birds to bucks, wouldn’t have seen either of the second two if I wasn’t out there at midday, and had a fun reason to call my dad and chat.

Realized it was my last day in a special urban zone I had applied for so I went for more fill the freezer and connected. No more points I can add for the team though with the anterless only zone. Really happy with the shot, quartering away at 22 yards, aim for your exit as a part of the preshot routine thought seems to work for me. Or did this time anyway. Headed back out after a buck tomorrow so hopefully I can upgrade. Grateful for the 3 does in the freezer, really want that first archery buck though. Work is telling me I am going to have to work for the next few weeks so time is going to be precious but it always is I suppose. As a former shotgun hunter who was used to 1-2 days a year of deer hunting I’m really enjoying the time spent in the woods. Hope I can keep getting better at it. The team thing is really cool; I think I would’ve skipped many days if I didn’t know how many of us were out there just doing or best.

I got as close as one could get twice yesterday to killing a doe without actually killing one. Both times the deer snuck in on me,first time I had one picked out and it needed to take two steps to clear the branches, but another deer spooked some right at my tree.and the target one ended up changing direction. Another doe was at 35 yds but she was alert so I resisted the temptation to shoot.
In the afternoon the deer surprised me enough so that I couldn't even grab my bow, they ended up right below me as well and eventually scented me. It is crazy how much has to go right to get a high probability archery shot.

Saw 13 from the tree this weekend but was just off the x barely at both my 1a spot and my 1b spot. all of the deer were 35-45 except 2 and they came by about 20 yards and 20 mph. I thought there might be a buck pushing them but didnt see one. This weekend was still a touch early to see chasing but I thought the temps might have had one feeling his oats. Going back Wed evening for a four day hunt. Mast hunting is pretty much over with this weekend so it's browse and travel which both of my primary spots also set up for.
