"The official saddle hunting backpack thread"

I don’t know if it will be more or less comfortable than the K3. But they spent a pile of resources testing and tweaking.

This, with any cheap quiet bags you want strapped on seems to make complete sense for anyone toting 30lbs of winter and hunting gear, and/or packing a deer out.

K3’s about to get cheap…

I wonder how cheap they will go. I wonder if they’ll have sales like MR did on the Popups.

I thought the same thing when I got that email….. a deeply discounted K3 frame would be a great start to see their gear.

Anyone here been using a Kuiu Pro 2300 or Pro Lt and liking it?

I got one because I loved the Venture 2300 but I wanted the frame to haul meat. The Pro 2300 has all the same features plus a few extras that I like. I also think the frame suspension and waist are the most comfortable I’ve tried. My stick with it is it sticks up high (to the center of the back of my head) because of the load lifters. The bag is more slender and tall than it is wide so it navigates through thick stuff well, but I have this feeling that I’m extra over killing for 97% of my hunts.

I’m 6’2” and the regular load life would be 2” shorter but that might throw off the geometry when I actually really need the lifters. I’m at 45 Deg right now so I think I’m at the bottom of this frame and would be at the top of the other. Anyone with a lot of pack experience please weigh in.

Here’s where the equation gets tricky. I bought a PRO LT 5000 bag for backpacking and possible elk hunting in the next couple years. So I like the thought of having one do it all frame, exchange pack as needed, but I don’t see myself keeping the whole system if I don’t use the frame and 2300 for whitetail.

For a tad more minimalist set up I’ve considered using the lid from the LT, in conjunction with the pack load hauler. But that’s dumping another $40 into a system I may not like.

If anyone has a picture of your KUIU pro set up for whitetail could you share. I’d also like to see pictures of the pack hanging from the tree if you got em.

Thanks!
I dont have the system you do but did use the Venture 1800 for a few seasons. Zero complaints with that pack for what it was designed to do. That said I wanted the versatility of being able to use one setup for western hunting and deer hunting here. Most days in the woods, there is no real need for a frame pack until you kill. Then that frame pack is going to shine in a big way. I opted for the kifaru duplex/striker xl pack and already had a sherman pocket that I was using on the venture. This pack will do anything and everything I will ever ask of it. If you are going to hunt out west and/or plan to field quarter and pack out your deer, stick with a frame pack that fits you well would be my advice. If you predominantly hunt private will will seldom if ever need to haul a critter out in a pack, there are tons of lighter smaller packs to get you by.

Yep, all public land, and not planning on dragging or carting again. It does fit exceptionally well, and I know it will be great once I kill. I did also already get the PRO LT bag for backpacking or western hunts so if I can convince myself to use the frame and 2300 for whitetail I do think I’ll be set and plenty satisfied with the system.

The only question I would have for your setup is if you have tested it with weight? Throw 50-75# on it and take it for a hike. If you dont find any issues then, you should start looking for something else to mess with cause you should be set pack wise.

Yea it’s a beaut with weight. I had 50 and 75 lbs on it and it felt great. You’re probably right though, I need to find something else to tinker with.

It is true that on Rokslide, Exo has specifically said there is no plan to discount K3 packs.

However guys have already started to drop them on classifieds to upgrade to the new system. That market is only getting better for buyers in the next few months.

K3 and K4 bags are not interchangeable between systems without some modifications, so it won’t just be frames for sale on the used market.

Exo plans to support K3 for 3 years.

Has anybody used/ heard about this pack system? I know the guys on the Do It Yourself Hunter YT channel seem to recommend it. Seems like great pricing compared to other system, made in Vietnam but a USA company. Lifetime warranty. Coming out with Camo edition this summer according to a recent email. Looks like they're also adding a bigger 5400 size pack in addition to their 3200 line. https://akek.com/

I'm hoping you stick with us and let us know what you think if nobody else chimes in. I'm 100% in love with my Venture 2300, to the point that I can't even imagine there's a better saddle pack out there, which makes me want the pro version; but the darn MR camo fire deals got me on a pop up. I hate the pop up but have to admit it's fine for the few instances that I could actually want to pack one out, given the price tag. That said I do want to offload the pop up at some point and upgrade to a pro 2300 but the thing I learned from the popup is the stiff hip belt stinks in a tree, which I worry about with the pro and is why I'm not in a rush to drop $500 on another pack that I don't really need.

Noisier than a bag of Dorito's. Lack of organization.

The lack of organizational capabilities was the first thing I noticed when I bought a popup28. Doesn’t seem like the 30 made any improvements on it, and I’m not fond of how the top lid opens.

I wish more packs came in subalpine. Or I wish Sitka still made subalpine pack covers. I may have to make my own. I just did something I thought I’d never do again- sent money to tethrd. Ordered a FAS pack and some Molle pouches. We’ll see.

Semper Fi,
Mike

So my story is this. I started with my first “nice pack” being the venture 2300. I absolutely enjoyed it, no complaints. Then I got an itch to pack my deer out so I went down that rabbit hole. I picked up a m1 eberlestock carrier frame, a popup38, a popup28, and this Kuiu Pro 2300. I like the layout and a lot of the features of the Popup series; however, they don’t fit me well and are/were pretty uncomfortable with any kind of weight on them. The bag sizes and organization really are about all you need, but I think the suspension of the system cancels a lot of the Pros out. It’s true the waist belt being stiff is a bit unruly in the tree. The Kuiu Pro waist belt is larger but doesn’t have that stiffener in it so it isn’t as bad. The material on the Popups is really nice as it is very water resistant, but that’s not a selling feature for me since a $20 pack cover will serve the same purpose.

I still have the old m1 carrier I bought used and I did get to pack one deer out with it this year. It was surprisingly comfortable and easy to load and haul. It is a little bit smaller than the Kuiu PRO because of the minimal load lifters so I have gravitated to it a good bit.

Im going to use the Kuiu Pro on my last week of hunts and see if I’ve have any resolve about it. Then I’m hoping to everything else.

My Thoughts on the Popups here: https://saddlehunter.com/community/index.php?threads/mystery-ranch-popup-28-and-38-talk.50297/

I'm just starting this chase. Got my first frame pack, F1 main frame. I have nothing to compare it with and haven't got a chance to climb a tree with it yet. But I have went shed hunting a couple times with it fully loaded with everything I would need to one stick a all day hunt. I was surprised at how well it felt hiking just a bit over two miles both times. Hoping to get in a tree this weekend with it?

I hate the belt setup on the Popup 28 and was going to return the pack the day it arrived. But I swapped-in a Seek Outside belt and it changed the pack entirely. I don't use the wings, just run the belt through the lumbar slot and connect the webbing to the shoulder straps.

I already had a Kuiu Pro 3600 and a Kifaru Duplex Lite w/ Stryker XL to compare to the Popup. I picked up an Exo belt too.

The Seek Outside belt is the most minimalist of the lot, the least rigid, and the most adjustable (4 belt straps instead of two for customizing pressure across the hips). I find it very comfortable.

Having changed belts, I've kept the Popup and use it with my LWCG .5 and sticks. They work together best, imo. Even though the Kifaru frame is the best at reducing felt load, for me, the setup wasn't as efficient with the .5 as was the Popup. I use the Kifaru pack with my saddle platforms and climbing platform and it's been awesome with those sets.

I think the Kuiu Pro suspension is nice. I liked the 3600 bag too. It's firmly in the middle in most areas, imo, but it does excel over the others in two areas: 1. lightweightness and 2. bag layout. I let my brother use it and he liked it so much it's now his.

I can't promise a different belt will be the ticket for you and your MR. I've been surprised by reviews others have shared about the Popup. Some say they really like the MR Belt, (I don't). Some say the lumbar pad is too big (I wish it was thicker). I suppose different body shapes and sizes have a lot to do about that. But for my shape and size, getting rid of the MR belt made an enormous difference in overall pack comfort and performance. It's been a good little system for me.

I'd still like to try a Seek Outside Revolution frame. It's the lightest, and has the most adaptable load system by far. But I don't know how well the wide metal frame will do with a treestand cinched against it. The Stone Glacier frame with a flat back looks like an excellent stand carrier, no experience there either. I like a lot about the K4 design, but I don't like some things about load attachment. I'll have to see a bit more there. It is designed more like a Kifaru frame, but retaining some of what makes the K3 a bit cushier under light loads.

I am looking for someone to help me out and take some good photos with a ruler of their predator pack all laid out. I want to sew up my own clone and would love the dimensions. Is anyone willing to get some measurements for me? I am also wondering how deep it is with the small side panels. This would be a big help if someone wouldn't mind measuring theirs for me as I know the R&D was already done by tethrd and it will save me a lot of time to have a starting place. I am spamming a few threads hoping I can find someone to help me out lol

Using 1" webbing width as a reference, you should be able to get pretty close holding a ruler up to a printed picture or two. As I recall, it's a very simple design.

This is true but I am trying to figure out the depth they use on the side panels as well since it will contain the folded post and I am going for a very close clone. I can for sure get it rough I am just trying to get right on the money since that exact size is proven and someone taking a few measurements will save me a lot of guess work on the front end

I used to own one and the measurement for the gusset really isn’t super critical as long as you’re close. As I recall, and looking at how it sits when full, the gusset is uniform width and the top and bottom panels are mirrors and don’t really account for a tight fit with the folded post. That’s part of why it looks a little distorted with the platform in the bag.
