"The official saddle hunting backpack thread"

After trying several kifaru, Kuiu, MR, stone glacier etc…

High end packs are the biggest overhyped scam in the hunting industry. If you aren’t packing out meat it’s completely unnecessary.

Save your money buy a tidewe, Huntworth or XOP pack.

I thought the point was packing out meat….. if it’s a short walk on private. I imagine pockets are probably fine..
I hunt public. Going back a mile in cold weather I want to pack my coat, bibs and mid layers. A small to medium size pack is a no go under these conditions.
Going in 200 yards in the early season is a different game.

That is the only reason to buy a frame pack lol

Well people need one for carrying 5lbs of sticks and a 3lb platform on this site.

Add a couple pounds of saddle and rope, 2-4lb of water, 1-2lb or more in winter layers, and a weapon, and you're creeping in on 25lb or more (to say nothing of the all important trail snackies). Call me soft, but I like a substantial internal frame or external frame for that amount of weight if I'm going to be hiking a few miles.

I use a badlands reactor. The main compartment is terrible it only opens at the top which means it’s hard to load and unload. It also has no compression straps so my platform and spurs get strapped around the whole pack. The reason I still use it is because it is very small, quiet, and I am a minimalist. The front pouch is nice and gives good access while in the tree. I have 7 packs and this is the only one I take up in the tree. The others create too big of a profile. I’ll use my stone glacier packs if I’m going deep or have to carry more gear but they stay stashed on the ground.

Also use the reactor. 2 sticks in bedroll straps and have been experimenting with running chest straps through platform and carrying on chest .

And they’re all noisy as heck too!!!!

Even if you are on private, depending on the terrain and whether or not you’re hunting from preset locations or not, I never know for sure what location I’m going to settle on so even on the 134 acre private I hunt a lot on I’m packing in sticks or my one stick, rope to rappel if one sticking, extra layers, calls, kill kit etc. I don’t see how you don’t unless you’re going to spend your whole day or evening walking bath and forth after a kill. If I were just hunting preset stands or locations where I’m not carrying in a way to go up or down I guess I wouldn’t need it. I’m still trying to figure out a system that no matter what I’m doing that day, I have just what I need but nothing more regardless. Unfortunately that involves a frame pack I’m afraid.

Anyone have/use the Tenzing "Hangtime" backpack or lumbar pack?
I'm contemplating the lumbar pack. I one stick and don't pack meat out.
Any reviews or insight is appreciated.

I’ll probably get booted for responding to a lumbar pack question in THE backpack thread…oh well. I really liked the hangtime lumbar, but I found it too big and it didn’t fit me quite as well as the trophyline Platow. I’m a 32” waist and it kinda made a triangle with the hip belt. Pack is flat as a flitter and quite wide so the wings on the belt were pulling in and the webbing had to be taken up all the way to get any weight transferred to my hips. My dad is 6’4” and 350lbs and thought it was the best pack ever. It is really well made.

Thanks for the response.
I'm 6' 200# with a 36" waist. Do you think it would fit me, or do you think I would have the same problems as you?
I can't find one locally, so would have to order one to try. Just want to avoid the hassle of returning it if I can. Thanks.

No clue. All based on proportions (I am 5’11” with a shorter torso). I did the amazon thing where you get free returns. Don’t toss the box until you decide!

Through hikers dont carry that much weight on a 4 month trip. saddle hunters need it for a morning hunt on the corner of the bean feild in the back 40?
