The reason I haven’t tried it is the amount of slack I see on the saddle tether when advancing if something goes wrong on the foot tether, and the overall low stability look of the process… what am I missing?

That’s one thing I’ve noticed as well and has put me on the fence about trying it. I suppose adding a linesman could help? Snug yourself to the tree while advancing the tether, but maybe that would make it cumbersome…

I was worried about this when I was trying to do the two foot loops. If you do single foot loop and wrap your other leg around the tree it feels pretty stable to me. There's still a chance of slipping I suppose, but im feeling a bit more comfortable with this than I used to (back when I thought two foot loops would be more stable though it seems to be the opposite). I am NOT an expert and still would default to sticks at the moment though, still learning

There is slack but it's pretty minimal, only the distance that you create when you stand up in the foot loop, so it's the equivalent of falling backwards into a chair, sitting down quickly is probably more accurate than falling. it would be the same amount as climbing a ladderstand with a lifeline style connection and advancing that connection every step. Stability grows as you practice it, you've got to figure out how big your movements can be and where the footloop needs to be positioned for everything to feel right. wrapping your leg around the tree adds a lot of stability while you advance the top tether, using a linemans belt would be a very cumbersome addition

For serious....I can't remember how the 2tc crew is passing limbs....that point in the climb can be dangerous, pinched fingies under a rope from having to advance a tether is another thing that could hurt ya...if u mindful and cautious all the climbing methods relatively "safe" but it's when u get complacent accidents happen. Rope climb probably the "safest" but even with that method there could/can/will be unforseen stuff that could mess u up

I clip into the carabiner on my foot tether and sit back into it. I then remove my main tether and take it off and advance it around the limb then clip back in and take up slack. This unweights the foot tether. I then unclip from the foot tether and sit into the top tether. Remove foot tether, advance around limb and go from there.

I rarely ever have to do this since most of the trees I have don't have limbs until well past where I want to climb. My foot tether carabiner spends most of its time as a backpack hanger.

I tried the 2 tc with a thigh loop with foot loop and thought it was pretty terrible.

Thought about trying it with just the saddle and foot loop or saddle and stirrups.

@Weldabeast I can't speak for everyone but I carry an amsteel daisy chain to use as a bow/bag hanger when I'm at height, and have used it occasionally as a third tether to get past a branch. Basically just throw it around the tree and pass it through a daisy, clip in to my bridge, (it has an extra carabiner on it as well that I use to hangit/my bag from) so I guess technically it's 3TC or maybe 2.5. but I also just haven't 2tc climbed many complicated trees yet to be honest.
