On barometric pressure, if it's anything above 29.5 I will be in a tree somewhere. In the areas I hunt east wind works 50/50. On my private it royally sucks lol. But I can make it work on public and thats usually what I do. Wind is predominantly south, on cold fronts itll be north or west.

Success!!!! I'm currently writing a book about it! 7 points inbound for my first buck, a spike and only my second archery deer, both imo public solo. Well I've got a few good friends I text while I'm in the woods. One in particular is freaking awesome

So I went in a new area, came in from the north on a west wind that was supposed to shift to north. Good idea? I dunno but it's poorly marked public and this was safe. I had talked to a good friend and mentor/ coach and we kinda e-scouted it. He picked a couple spots and I decided I was going to...

Extra pics. A little under #70 solution ss @28 inches performance with a 425 gr arrow. Grim reaper micro hades pro 4 blade. Blood trail sucked, it went about 110 yards or so

That's pretty good shot placement, maybe a touch high, surprised your blood trail was so sparse. Did you ever find your arrow back? Entrance was by the shoulder, exit in front of ham? Don't forget to put a pic in the submission thread when you get time

2 thoughts after reading your write up:

1 - why were you so concerned about being so close to an empty bed?
2 - those tucked up legs on the recovery tell me you did the absolute right thing backing out and coming back. Assuming you entered at the ham and exit was up closer to the shoulder? Probably mainly guts/liver and that's why you didn't get much of a trail.

So I've been back and forth on this. The entrance was definitely the shoulder, out the ham. I really did think he was quartering away in the moment. I'm pretty sure I've said it both ways, quarter to and away. I'm talking myself into that he was quarter to as evidenced by the shot but I'll be darned if I wasn't certain he was q. Away at the shot. I guess it's hard to say if I was wrong or he moved or both? I think my arrow is going 265+

I would say I hit my mark for elevation, if I should be a little lower I'm all ears. I did hit a little left/ back from aim but within my margin of error, especially on a live target with no dot. Maybe I did hit the spot, maybe I was a little off, maybe it moved. Maybe all of the above

As for the bed... I dunno I guess just inexperience. I don't want to drive them out if the area and be starting over. It's not a big deal to be in there leaving scent ? Or generally distrupt the area?

It's hard to say what actually happened without good video evidence, eyewitnesses are terrible in these cases.
If he was quartering to from the ground I would want to be 1" lower and 1" to the shoulder, still within my margin for error though. From a treestand/saddle I would aim for that point up and down or maybe higher if the angle was steeper and 1" further forward, for quartering to, and still within my margin of error. overall nothing wrong with the shot placement.
were you able to take the time to do a postmortem and see what you hit?

I asked about the beds because you were there and they weren't. For an afternoon hunt I wouldn't expect any deer to be coming back to them specifically to bed so I wouldn't be concerned about the beds or more wary because of them. Scent for the next time, sure, but if you're not going to be back within 1/2 week-week I wouldn't be too concerned. If I find a bed I'm trying to get in them and learn why they're there and how they're laying in them. You're already 5-10 yards away, what difference does it make, ya know?

Looks pretty lethal to me. You went thru the boiler room and everything else. Sometimes they run. The exit could have gotten plugged. You may have only hit one lung, but you got liver and lots of penetration. Good job good shot

I think someone asked if I found my arrow, but I don't see/ didn't look hard. I did not. There was some fairly thick trees / shrubs behind the animal and shooting flat like that it's probably buried in the ground. There may be a few of them by my target lol. Too bad at the time plus I'd kinda like to put it with my first deer and first turkey arrows. Oh well

Didn't you say you set up there because of seeing deer in the past? I'd guess he was just heading somewhere to get a bite but you'd have more of a guess than me

Didn't you mention an apple tree you were sitting under? any apples left on it? I assumed he was there to eat apples but he may have been traveling to another food source.

I would plan on going back in sometime soonish or maybe later in season after foliage drops to look for your arrow and try and fill in some of the blanks about why and how deer are using this area. even if it turns into a scouting trip it's still worthwhile.
