“P” bottle or let it fly?

Dr Deer did a segment on testing on whether deer reacted negatively to our urine using trail cameras. No negative results at all and some good results in scrapes if I remember correctly. I don't worry about it anymore.

On opening weeken a few years back I pissed out of a stand with a lot of canopy cover. There was no spot to aim for where it would miss the leaves in the trees and hit the ground so I let it fly. It hit the canopy and was dripping on the ground. I was upset with myself for not bringing an empty bottle because it was a mess. 10 minutes later a very large 12 point buck walked around the stand and got directly down wind. I could not see him but could hear where he was. He then busted though the woods and went directly where my urine was dripping. He started ripping the leaves from the trees and going nuts like he was either mad or enjoying a delicacy. He then bedded down and stayed there until about an hour after dark pinning me to the tree. I had to lower my bow to the ground and bounce it a few times so I could get out of there.

I have read an article that advised urine is urine. I always use it to start my mock scrapes along trails. Definitely works.

I think it was in a different deer and deer hunting article that I read human feces will drastically affect deer movement. They recommended using Milorganite (human manure bag) as a means of keeping deer out of food plots. They tested it against many other chemicals and deer repellants. It was the overwhelming winner. It would keep the deer out for a minimum of 2 weeks. This also works from my experience.

If deer don’t know who’s urine is who’s, why do the pee in scrapes? The bucks and does are communicating right? Those animals can tell a lot from each other’s urine.

Deer are a curious creature. I do not want to invite them to be curious around a stand site where they may pick up some less desirable scents Lear behind. While the urine itself may not be a big deal, it’s not a thing that I am willing to risk, in a high pressure area and alert them to my presence at all. If it goes into the woods, it also come out with me, in a bottle or some other form.

That doesn’t bother me AS much because that’s usually the only time I will sit that tree. It could definitely add to the potential overall perceived pressure though. I just can’t pack out how much I’m going to pee on an all day sit. I typically drink 1.5-2 gallons of water a day.

I believe the Tarsal, Metatarsal, and interdigital glands are the scents that are utilized for communication in the scrape. (Other glands for the licking branch)
I read somewhere that it is postulated that the deer urinate on them to take advantage of the ammonia as a solvent of sorts to easier let the fatty-acids produced by the glands to disperse and evaporate.... spreading scent much more efficiently.

I tried looking up studies and have not been able to find anything concrete. Just 1 article on the subject referenced a study that found that human and buck urine attracted more deer to mock scrapes than doe in heat urine did.

This same article advised that deer and human urine is different and breaks down differently in the chemical sense. So I am wrong and stand corrected.

Never had negative effects from peeing out of tree. I worked on a lift boat about 8 years ago and the cook was a girl from the milk river in N or SD forget which. She grew up on a sheep farm there. She said there were so many deer that came and ate their flowers that they tied human hair to the branches to keep them from eating them. Don’t know how true it was but don’t know why she would lie about it.

I have heard stories about anti-hunters doing the same thing on public hunting lands. I would assume it would be a deterrent as the hair holds a lot of human scent.

Yep I guess so. She told me they hung it all over the yard.

My grandparents used to get bags of hair from the local barber in the summer, they would fill old pantyhose full of hair and hang them and aluminum pie pans to clang together around the garden. They thought it worked.

If you already hunted the spot urine is the least of your worries. The deer already know you were there from human scent left behind. A little added pee won’t make them any more spooked.

I have had plenty of deer smell my pee on the upwind side of my tree and never spook but as soon as they get downwind or if the dropping thermals are sending my human scent down it’s game over.

Those deer will key off on any human scent and associate it with their past experiences. If I went out and peed every time I fed those deer corn, I don’t think I’d have anything to worry about. But if one of their pack members come up missing or even if they’re harassed and then they come into contact with human urine then it’s a different danger alert. Problem is, is neighbors and myself like to eat deer.

This is very true. But I go to a “bit” of extremes in my program to ensure what is left behind is as small as possible. All trails are sprayed and cleared so that the only thing touched is the ground, in fact I don’t even touch the ground the last 40-50 yards to the stand to avoid the ground disturbance, not to mention it’s quieter than stepping on crunchy leaves. The whole goal to to minimize any scent left behind because they find out as much or more after we leave than the time we spend in the stand even.

This is a very interesting topic. I have read articles that cited studies saying that bucks will use a scrape more with human pee in it then doe in heat or other scents. I have a friend who adamantly opposes anyone urinating from a deer stand or even in the woods at all for that matter. He won't even pee until he gets out to the truck. Sitting on a deer stand farting the whole time. Sometimes people just don't make sense. Anytime I would hunt with him he would always ask me if I had a p bottle to which I would simply lie and say yes. I've killed deer from stand I peed on. I've had deer walk under stands with pee almost dripping on them soon after I relieve myself. I've never worried about it. As a matter of fact after reading a couple of those articles anytime I'll find a scrape in the woods I pee in it to keep it fresh. I don't typically share this information with guys I hunt with because some of them would lose it. I think it would make a cool thread this year for guys who run trail cameras to set up a camera on a mock scrape and pee in it and post their photos of what happens.

I’ve watched bucks use deer scrapes that i peed in

I watched them work fake scrapes that I made & peed in

Had them come lick bushes under me that I peed on from my stand

Now I’ve also seen a coyote pee & the deer definitely knew what that was.
