2018 Deer Contest Discussion

Ok, so mine aren't as good as @DaveT1963 but, not bad for first 4 shots of the morning at 18yrds.I'm ready!
Nice shooting......Good is a relative term - I suck most days and since having eye surgery and now shoulder problems (limited shooting) I am having to play with anchor point and a host of bad form issues. If "he" walks within 20 yards "HE" will more than likely die.

Thanks! Yup, I hear ya-- as much as you get the debate over the "Paper plate" "Test" I'm a pretty firm believer that if I can put it within 6" of the point I"m aiming for, I"m going to kill it. My issue is when I let my mind get in the way. If I just go out, draw to a consistent anchor and let em fly, I'm pretty dead on....

Shouldn’t that only be 2.5 points, since the bear ate half?

Ha ha....

Honestly I'm a little confused and maybe I'm missing something. You shot a doe and took pics and then a bear stole the deer. Did you recover it after that or was it stolen for good? If so shouldn't that be -5 point? ;)
Yes. I still have to write up the story but that is the gist of it. Shot doe, bear showed up while I was tracking her. I found her and took the photo. As I'm getting ready to go get my sled he shows back up and runs me off her and proceeds to start eating her. When I came back he was still there so I had to throw logs at him to scare him off. When I got to the deer he had ripped out portions all over her body and it wasn't worth taking her. I cut the head off to tag and got the hell out of there.

Hey @redsquirrel what do guys have to shoot on a trad team when it comes to firearms. Do we have to shoot a Flintlock or something, or can we shoot a modern firearm. I only ask because I have a modern firearm quota hunt this year and I can't carry my bow during those hunts.

I guess so. I don't really care, it's all for fun. The trad guys are usually so hardcore that this has never come up before lol.

Honestly just kidding. Bear stealing your deer sucks!!!!

Thanks! This is the worst part of hunting. I didn't know it was possible to be this bummed out while in the woods.
I feel your pain. I lost 2 deer and 2 hogs last year. Before that I had never lost a hoofed critter. One of the deer was a nice 8 point on public land. I was literally screaming at myself in the truck ride home.

No gun here - I hunt with my recurve or longbow right though the seasons.
I would too but I'm not allowed to carry a bow in the woods for the modern Firearms hunt. I wouldn't even worry about it except for it's right in the middle of a two-week hunt. That will cut off three days of hunting when my wife took 2 weeks off of work so I can do nothing but. I hate to lose three days of hunting just because I can't carry a bow in the woods. I'll stick to contest submissions taking with my recurve only. Try and keep it fair for all the other teams

I lost a pig last year, but never released another arrow.
I came to realize that my goals were all wrong. Dan kinda shook me out of it this spring when I was up there... He really kind of pounded it in my head. I have to stop passing up bucks that would be my "biggest" just because I want something more mature.
I have passed up several legal bucks in the last 3 years in the hopes of nailing one of the few, massive, ghosts instead. No more. I am a "if it's legal, it's down" kind of hunter this year.
I need to get proficient with killing deer. Period.
Now, a legal buck here is still an accomplishment on public land here, because they have to be 13" inside spread or greater. That's already a dang good public buck right there.

Yea, it's all for fun. That is why this contest has no prizes. Because it doesn't matter! It's all about going out and hunting and having fun! Go shoot with a compound a crossbow a rifle a trad bow or a bazooka if legal. Just have fun!

You can't carry a bow if you have a firearms tag? I know every state game laws are different but I can carry a bow during firearms season (Michigan) but I have to have a firearm licence and follow all firearm rules for the 2 weeks of firearms season....

It hasn't been that long (maybe 5 or so years) since we were allowed to carry a bow during our 6 day shotgun season. All other gun seasons you can not fill that tag with a bow.
