2018 Deer Contest Discussion

Yup that's what I was afraid of.
Lol. If you've been around long enough you'd know that I would more likely hurt my team by being lenient on others and harsher on myself in the scoring.

:) All in good fun. Congrats again on 2 great deer. I'm just jealous I have another 2 weeks before I can be out there.

Hey, um.. .everyone else in the contest... I'm getting lonely at the top...
Yeah.....um.....see.... the thing is....my state wants Bambi to enjoy at least one full summer with her mom. So you'll have to be lonely a while longer.

You can't carry a bow if you have a firearms tag? I know every state game laws are different but I can carry a bow during firearms season (Michigan) but I have to have a firearm licence and follow all firearm rules for the 2 weeks of firearms season....
It's only for the modern Firearms quota hunt. I've read all the regs and the best I can understand it and talkin to other people that have already hunted The Refuge this is the case. I'm going to double-check and make sure but as of right now it is my understanding during the modern Firearms quota hunt you can only shoot a modern firearm it doesn't make any sense to me but so I've Been Told.

It hasn't been that long (maybe 5 or so years) since we were allowed to carry a bow during our 6 day shotgun season. All other gun seasons you can not fill that tag with a bow.
In Louisiana we do not have firearms or archery tags. We get six tags. Three of which are for Doe, two are for antler deer, and one either sex. archery season generally runs from October 1st through January 31st with primitive and modern Firearms Seasons falling somewhere in between. This is why I bow hunt because I can do it the entire season. But this is a National Wildlife Refuge I'm hunting on so everything is different.

I was in South Dakota waiting for a fuzzy antlered swamp donkey, but couldn't stop thinking about shooting a year old doe as my milkweed was bouncing off her face at 10 yards. I thought 5 points toward the contest probably wasn't the best reason to kill her.... but I see that I was wrong!

Speaking of rules, don't you state a picture must be taken of the hunter, saddle, and kill? I'm yet to see a hunter and saddle with doe #2. For all we know @huck72412 huck hit it with his brown truck...just saying...
Correct. Go look in the thread now. I did not post it until last night, I didn't post the updated score until after, and most importantly I didn't trash talk until both of those had been taken care of :tearsofjoy:

Hahaha

Ok, you got me, you're following the rules, I believe you shot it now:innocent: you're right the trash talking is way more important than the score is anyway!

Thanks! This is the worst part of hunting. I didn't know it was possible to be this bummed out while in the woods.
Well not trying to kick you when you are down, but you do know that you just cursed your whole team,....... Just kidding, unfortunately that's bow hunting sometimes.

I lost a pig last year, but never released another arrow.
I came to realize that my goals were all wrong. Dan kinda shook me out of it this spring when I was up there... He really kind of pounded it in my head. I have to stop passing up bucks that would be my "biggest" just because I want something more mature.
I have passed up several legal bucks in the last 3 years in the hopes of nailing one of the few, massive, ghosts instead. No more. I am a "if it's legal, it's down" kind of hunter this year.
I need to get proficient with killing deer. Period.
Now, a legal buck here is still an accomplishment on public land here, because they have to be 13" inside spread or greater. That's already a dang good public buck right there.

I've always been a "brown and down" guy. Bucks are nice, but venison is venison. I've kilt plenty of deer, and been able to recover some iffy shots. I definitely believe that shooting ANYTHING and going through the follow-up routine to recover will make you better prepared for when the big one steps out.

Not sure what voodoo got laid on me last year, but I did finally put the hurt on another WMA buck, so hopefully that evil ran its course.

Yea, it's all for fun. That is why this contest has no prizes. Because it doesn't matter! It's all about going out and hunting and having fun! Go shoot with a compound a crossbow a rifle a trad bow or a bazooka if legal. Just have fun!

I think as part of the fun, whichever team wins, all the other teams should have to send them a white elephant gift. Could be pretty fun and funny.
