2018 Team 5 Thread

Started a 3 day hunting trip this morning with 35° below average weather. Rain was coming in sideways, and it has been off and on all day. Had to escape to the warmth of the truck to try to dry off. It might only be 39°, but when you are soaked to the bone... it feels darn cold.

I knew I should have ponies up for the waterproof Sitka pants to go with the jacket I got last year.

I saw a couple does out on my way out, but the winds were swirling so bad they winded me not 15 yards into my stall.

Headed back in in about an hour, going 3 miles back in hopes of a buck. I won’t hesitate to shoot a doe, though... gotta get some points on the board, and I wouldn’t hate to have an excuse to drive home and run a load in the dryer.

Any update?????

Ya, had an equipment breakdown as far as rain gear went. Rain was coming in sideways all morning yesterday. Went to the truck at mid day and ran the heat on high for a few hours to dry everything off and went back out 3 miles and got set up.
About 5:00pm, I had an “emergency crap”. About 10 minutes later I decided I should probably make it back to the truck just in case. Had another “emergency” on the way back to the truck.

Spent today at home, and kind of don’t feel bad about missing hunting today. 2 full hours without rain, and we are at 40°. Sits like that won’t be too bad when I get decent rain gear, but when I’m soaked to the bone... they are brutal. The good news is the rain looks to be lifting by the weekend, so next week is looking better.

Basically, it was a cluster...

Just completed my 4th sit in a row without seeing a deer. Gotta love that first October cold front. That said I made a commitment to hunt big bucks this year and that isn't a numbers game. 2 of the 4 buck bed sits I felt were really well played just nothing showed. The other two were botched by wind and that's just the mountains for ya.

Going through my gear and after reading this I just realized I ain't got no poop tickets. Thanks for the reminder

I will never forget them again... I would have had to use oak leaves. You never get lucky and have to dump near a lambs-ear.

I can't tell you how many times I've pooped and used leaves lol. Beech leaves work pretty well up here when they're still green :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

Call me a weirdo but I’d rather go in the woods any day. I keep half a roll of toilet paper inside two ziplocks at all times. Good for tracking too.

Sycamore leaves work great too.

I need a team....got one buck already....well truth be told I thought it was a doe at first but I'm bow hunting and old...Get one in the freezer and then go after the big one

Alright guys.... I am going to get one more 3-day block of hunting, and two 4-day blocks between now and thanksgiving.

My wife tried to talk me into using one of the 4-day blocks starting this Tuesday... but I am thinking of using those for the first two weeks of November to better catch the rut.

What says y’all?

Rut hunt for sure unless you have a buck figured out right now.
I’ll be off the first week of November myself, should be a good week.

I prefer to hunt them when I can pattern them, unless I've got plenty of advance scouting and have travel corridors nailed down for rut. Too unpredictable for my tastes if I have the choice.

If you got one figured out or just a killer spot I'd say take it now. Otherwise wait for rut. But don't hunt MN today fellas ain't nothing going on with all this wind

I have a few bucks narrowed down to a general area, but nothing nailed down specifically this year.

I’m thinking the rut is screaming at me.

Well, I’m headed back out in the morning to try the property I wasn’t able to properly hunt last week.

Looks like there will only be rain* for Wednesday afternoon, but I will be out there from Tuesday morning until dark on Thursday.

Edited... only RAIN Wednesday afternoon...

I'm jealous. This weather is perfect for hunting and I'm working all week

Alright fellas, I got a theory. Tell me what you think...

I found this buck bed on a point of this ridge about 3 weeks ago. It was wore down, had fresh rubs in it, rubs from years past, and multiple beds within an area. The bed was up against some brush. With his back to that brush, he would be there with a SE wind. He has 3 trails coming out of the bedding area, one main trail leading to the crop field on private.

So I got the day off Friday and there is supposed to be a SE wind Friday afternoon/evening.

This is my first year hunting bedding areas, but I’ve got a good feeling about this one on Friday. If nothing else, should get an encounter.
