2022 Turkey Hunting Thread

Burying my grandma

I've seen probably 50 turkey and easy 100 deer in just a couple days....

South jersey.

I met family members I've never met before.....I have a cousin that has access to a 4k acre farm/nursery and he invited me to come up and hunt next season....hopefully it wasn't just a kind gesture
Sorry to hear about your grandma @Weldabeast. Thoughts sent your way brother!

Oh yea. Turkeys are all over suburban areas just walkin around neighborhoods. My buddy lives up there.

I feel bad for you guys. The pollen used to just kill me, but my allergies have changed up and it doesn't bother me. That nasty yellow powder has been on everything around here over the last month or so. One thing I did when it bothered me was to find a source of local honey and eat that throughout the year. I sort of think that may have been what made me not so susceptible to pollen now.

I went out yesterday and got there at 4:30 to beat any competition to the spot. It worked. I hunted an area of about 5 square miles that is foot traffic only since they locked the main gates this season. I ended up walking 45 minutes in the dark to a spot I thought would get me where I could hear anything if a gobbler fired off at daylight. No luck. I ended up walking 4.6 miles all told yesterday and heard zero gobbles from daylight to noon. I did see 4 hens and 2 coyotes. So far, my zero gobbles all season run is holding.

One day I’m fine. Next day I’m fighting for my life out there! Man it’s terrible. My allergies are the worst anyways. Do what you gotta do tho to hunt these things!

I'm 2 years into doing the allergy shots, and I haven't had a single hint of allergy this year with no medicine. I wish I hadn't waited all those years to do it.

Oh, and I shot my first turkey ever this morning.

Nice TSS pattern with the 410 at 15 yards. We’ll be in a blind with decoys.

Why are these calls so expensive now? Did he die or something? I wonder if my original DD Adams Double Slate from Quaker Boy is worth that kind of money? Its nothing fancy at all but I still have the original cardboard display box it came in, the two plexy strikers and the lanyard. Although it was an actual slate call, the strikers were clear plexiglass which made it run even when wet.

The Cody shop had a fire and they have not been available except on the used market and some people have more $ than sense. They are supposed to reopen.

What shotgun is that? What gauge? What barrel length? What choke?

I'll guess that it is a Steven's 301 Turkey .410 since he said in the post itself that it's a 410.

Lol fair enough; was scrolling to fast it seems

Saturday was the day of the silent Tom’s. Heard 0 gobbles but had several show up but I couldn’t make it happen. 1 Tom and his Jake friends snuck up on my weak side. I heard a cluck and poof there they were. By the time I was able to pivot, he had his back to me and was out of range.

Next one came to 60 and kept poking his head up over a fallen tree looking for the hen. He never saw one and I couldn’t get him any closer. Never had a shot.

Looking back my setup was bad, but I’m not sure how to know that if they don’t gobble. It’s almost like hunting deer from the ground except harder.

Today was a bust. I went back to the same spot for revenge. Moved closer to where they were crossing with a decoy. This time I had a gobble come from the opposite direction. He was far but continued to get closer until he didn’t. Seemed to take a turn and never looped around. Assuming he got distracted with another hen. I did get into a long back and forth with a group of hens which was entertaining.
