2023 Mobile Hunting Expo

I was there today.
Custom gear mod fixed me up with a custom aider built to help my little size 14 tender feet.
I made some comments under the new gear thread about some of the stuff. Very lite crowed today.
The Hype booth and Hang Free were very lonely when I was their.

My impressions from the show. If I need anything for saddle hunting I will continue to look to our crew here in house, CGM, Wood, Overwatch, EWO. They werent all at the show but I have messed with and/or own gear from all of them and imo, the gear and people are some of the very best in the game. It was nice to get to shake hand with @always89y and @DanO. The two stands I was most interested in looking at were the ingwe and elevate. The ingwe is stupid light and about the same size as a windwalker. The first person I watched get on one, surprisingly, it didnt appear to have hardly any flex. Later in the day I watched a couple other folks on it and it had a good bit of flex. Talked to the owner and he said that was intentional to reduce foot and leg fatigue and that it has been load tested and is rated for 300#. I didnt see anyone on an elevate but I was more curious about looking at that stand because of the unique design with the double post. They always seemed to have multiple folks there talking to them so I didnt wait to visit with them. Their design though I think is best suited to really taking a build way outside the current box for stands and really building a true hybrid.

One of the more interesting folks I talked to was Bill with Spartan Forge. He was showing the new updated that will be rolling out soon. I already have the app but when the new update rolls out I will drop Onx and likely delete Caltopo. The level of detail coming with the Lidar map is impressive.

I was curious about Spartan Forge. My On-X tracking sometimes has me 20 yards off the trail that I’m actually on and it makes it rough navigating in or out of new spots at dark

I havent had that issue with Onx but have heard of or seen post from other folks that have. I also havent had that issue with SF so far.

Isn't that more of a individual cell service/area dependent issue? I have seen the same issue with SF & HuntStand, but it’s always in areas with poor cell service.

I regret not taking time to talk with Bill.. Should’ve done that on Friday..

I have had the issue in areas where I have 3 or 4 bars, and areas where I have to use the off line map because I have 1 bar or no service, so for me it hasn’t been cell service related. Swamp N stomp love hunt stand but I’m not a fan. Spartan Forge is one I’ve been researching this off-season just in case I decide to switch

Nearly all of the areas I hunt either have very poor or no cell service. I am usually using the offline maps in the woods and have not had that issue with Onx or SF. It very well may be related to trying to use the apps in a weak signal area using the online maps.

I dont think you will be disappointed with SF at all.

I have Hunt Stand. The topo's are not very good. When Spartan Forge updates they should be on par with Caltopo.

That's the most interesting thing I've heard about on a gear thread in a looooonnnnng time.

When's the new update and where can I learn more. I wrote spartan forge off initially but will try again for lidar
It is built and ready to release. He said they were just waiting on one approval I think of some sort. I think he said he expected to go live in the next couple of weeks and was going to be putting together a new video going over the changes. The UVA map has pretty awesome detail but the Lidar is really sharp. Also will have the ability to scroll historical maps on screen.

He said he could zoom up his treestands on the new stuff and I dont doubt it any based on what he showed me.

The lidar map I had made for an island near my house showed a 4" well cap sticking up about 6" above the ground. A 7.5 topo shows the area as flat marsh. No variation. Aerial photos show some Canopy variation that hints at lowland/ridges, but it's inconsistent.

The lidar makes the place look like a hill country topo map. It shows every oak ridge and every tupelo swamp. And there's not 2ft of elevation change on 500 acres of "swamp."

Lidar is going to be the single-biggest change to swamp hunting I think I'll see in my lifetime.

Any one listen to any of the speakers? Or even in the past sat in on those sort of lectures?

Do they have LIDAR that Caltopo doesn't have? I never stopped by the booth to talk to them.

I believe he said the Lidar map will be at 5cm. You can see a baseball in your yard.
