People would be wise to walk the way of the elk.

Found a nice cluster of pheasant backs last weekend, wasn't for sure I knew what they were so I left them be. went back this weekend and they were getting pretty buggy and looked like they were starting to rot at the stem

so much for sustainable forest management eh?!
Large out of state Investment companies like whyerhuaser ,and hancock completely rape the land then sell it,or lock it up then charge hundreds for permits to enter...scumbags.we still have some good grass roots companies that have great working forestry practices like Hampton and starker timber.

Its been a terrible year for morels around me in MD. My best spot also has been compromised by covid-19 lockdown inspired hikers and foragers. So the small ones I leave are snipped when I come back in a couple days

In weirder news...I picked these so nobody accidentally eats them. Psylocibe Ovoids are extremely dangerous if you listen to the wrong kind of music after ingestion. These only mix well with bluegrass and maybe some WSMFP towards the peak. Threw em in the trash. Be safe out there. Text me if you want a pin for the trash can location ;)

Same here. I don't things are ever going back to anything like the before times real soon. Between the WFH and what I see a ton of is all the boomers in peak young retirement age, weekdays are the old weekends and weekends are an absolute zoo. Shrooms, turkeys, fishing, it's a lot harder to find solitude especially those things that exist in small areas relative the overall size of the landscape. I hate to mope or complain I still find trouble to get into. That's a find I hope your trashcan appreciates them.

I went for a quick walk today at a spot that's usually good and found one lonely yellow. Third time out looking and only one I found all season. I think I'm calling 2023 a morel failure around these parts.

The more I hear about crowds for mushrooms and deer numbers and fish catches, the more I realize how lucky I am to live in the southeast. There’s more of all of those things than I can carry. I’m the limiter.

You boys wouldn’t know what to do with yourselves in a Mississippi River willow brake full of oyster mushrooms after 3 straight days of rain.

We do have lots of good shroomin most months of the year. It's pretty much just the couple weeks of morels that inspire the casual folk. They're a tad overrated if you ask me. In my top 5 but a few that are better eating.

Pheasant back almost always has bugs on it. if you give them a salt bath the bugs all leave it. or you cook em in there for extra protein! one of my favorites to find especially because its usually a good haul off one or two logs. I know people say the big ones are tough but i cut the outer 3 inches or so off em and then cut em into strips and marinate. Then throw em on the grill. voila! so good. the watermelon rind smell when you pick em is pretty cool too.

By far my favorite for food is lions mane. we dont find much but its nice makin crab cakes out of em. Old bay on everything...

Nice tip about the salt water. COTW down here is plentiful but usually buggy.

I found 2 nice lion's mane mushrooms down here during deer season. Shared them with my folks who were only marginally impressed until I told them to check the price on what they were eating. Apparently they taste better when you realize you just ate $100 worth of side dish!

Ok fungi fun guys, what in the world is those brightly colored oddball that just popped up in my pumpkin patch? Flying insects seem to be attracted to the top darker colored bit.
