2024 Off-Season Getting/Staying In Shape Motivation Thread

Yeah I’ve heard that at every step, wait til 25, wait til 30 wait til 35, I’m currently in the best shape of my life and keep gaining. The 2 most in shape people I know personally all around are respectively 54 and 58 years old, though both are lifer military types and maybe the job kept them in shape/motivated anyone can achieve this and age is just a number. Certain things are unavoidable but I think ALOT of people lean on the crutch of age as an EXCUSE and nothing more.

I am trying to embrace this running thing even if it is like hugging a skunk. Wife couldnt go to the gym yesterday and I said I thought I would run on the treadmill. Her recommendation was to do interval sprints. The little running I have done the last few years I have been like a 10 minute miler and could do that for 3 miles or so on a good day. Like I said before, not a good runner. So anywho, I did a half hour on the treadmill started a pretty fast walk for me 3.6-3.7 on the speed for a couple minutes and then 1 minutes sprints at 8. The machine said 8 was a 7:30 mile pace. 9 rounds of that nonsense actually went ok. Think I could hold that pace for a minute and half maybe 2 and will try that next time. Honestly wasnt sure my feet would do that. Been a good long minute since they have moved like that LOL.

Oh, 55 checking in. I can tell you how bad it sucks when you skip near all forms of exercise between 25 and 48. No where close to where I would like to be yet but I'm gaining on it.

This! Yes I say age is just a number but that’s with saying if you never stopped staying in shape, through 20’s and 30’ and 40’s. Your body slows down when you do and if you do the same thing too long it’s almost as bad, ever heard of marathoners body? Just running for a long time may make you good at running but that doesn’t mean your in shape. Like I said some things are unavoidable but if the first time you’ve ever had a workout plan is after 35 or 40 it can be done but it’s a long hard road. That’s what keeps me going bc I know this fact. I’ll never have to get back on the horse bc I’m never getting off.

Thoughts on doing that type interval work to improve general running?
Great! Interval sprints is the fastest way to build good cardio but once achieved longer interval and less intense running is required to maintain cardio. You don’t even have to run to maintain cardio just being overly active helps a lot. Case and point I ran a mile this morning for the first time in at least 4 or 5 years, but bc I’m overly active I know I can hop up anytime and run a mile in under 7 min even on a bad day.

A somewhat different perspective: while I agree with monster about interval sprints being great for your cardiovascular system... They are also much more likely to result in an injury (pulled muscle, shin splints, you name it) while you're getting in shape. My opinion is when starting out/getting back in shape, it's better to do low intensity exercise consistently for a few months (like a 30 min jog at your 10 minute pace) and then build in higher intensity months down the line once your tendons and ligaments and musculoskeletal system has had some time to strengthen.

My bad and yes this exactly, I forget I’m not training 20 yr olds anymore. Lol

Agree with this. I didn't do anything from maybe 17 - 40. Started walking in 2019, then started running during the lockdowns. Now I'm down 70+lbs and in the best shape of my life.

I'm not starting from scratch by any means, I just havent been a distance runner, EVAR.

Dang it. Ran fairly gently just 2x in the past week and am feeling the ole runner’s knee ache again in my left knee. I’m gonna have to do some stretching and strength training I guess before I can really run often and far, or I’ll just be abusing it and waiting to get hurt.

Any tips?

Did the trainer thing. Kinda disappointed, I dunno if I just want feeling it or I really, really wanted another butt-whooping like last week. It was a good workout, just didn't scratch that itch. Good dude, still glad I picked him. It's all good, just trying to figure out still. Went to breathework yoga afterwards, not sure how I feel about that. I was still pretty wound up, and that didn't really fit the yoga style but overall was good. Kept me moving and focused, even if I didn't make the most of yoga like I'd like to. I'm working on finding my groove, it's all good! Enjoying the journey

I put in another 6 miles on the treadmill tonight. Felt great, and IMHO the day to day ups and downs are very normal/universal @Horn, I know I feel them for sure, sometimes it's the amount of sleep or stress or nutrition or something else entirely. I have yet to find yoga that I enjoy doing, which is a shame because I'm pretty inflexible (like 6 inches from my toes when I reach for em), so it would definitely help me

I don't have any knee specific tips other than I ice mine when I start feeling a pinch. usually 2-3 days of icing and it goes away.

stretching - I like the myrtle routine
leg strength - I like lunges and squats

Backwards sled pulls, anything knees over toes I can’t preach this guy enough for knee pain/recovery and strengthening it’s his whole shtick. Dude could barely walk getting out of high school then developed a program for knee strengthening and now can dunk. I’ve incorporated his methods nearly as soon as he hit social media and my knees are bullet proof and it hasn’t taken long at all.

We did that calendar workout again yesterday. 12 movements, rep count is # of days for the month. For time. KB swings 50#, wall ball toss 20#, DB rows 2x40, sit ups, squats 2x40 dbs, hang cleans 2 x 40 dbs, pushups, box step ups, lunges, burpees, air squats, sit ups. We finished 25:10. Last time was 27:40 so pretty good improvement.

The burpees get me. Only thing I broke on. Did those 12/10/9 with 30-45 second pauses.

I bought his knee ability zero book after seeing you mention him earlier in this thread. I’ve had surgery on both knees and after just a few weeks of following his routine I’ve already started noticing improvements.

whew that was a workout, I think I got everyone. (as an aside, is there an easier way to see everyone that's posted in a thread than scrolling through the whole thing?)

If you're mentioned here, you've replied to the thread at least once and I want to hear from you again. Some of you check in regularly, some may be tired of regularly hearing about my slow runs lol. I dont care if you're running, walking, hitting the gym, chopping wood, scouting, crossfitting, digging a hole, or doing something else, get out there and get after it! how's everyone doing roughly 1/4 of the way into 2024? no time like the present to keep the consistency going, or to get back on the wagon!

i'm not very motivating. 57yo that had back surgery last year and trying to not do that again.

for me its watching diet closely, walking, rucking, hiking, resistance training, wood chopping, etc. BOOORRRIINNNGGGG. but works for me.

lucky for me i live on flat ground and my public is well managed and target rich. ive killed deer < 150yds from vehicle and rarely have to go more than 600yds to fill the freezer. deer cart and saddle are my go-tos. happy to walk 10 miles to scout or hike tho esp if camping is involved.

yall tear it up and gitter done. use it or lose it.
