40# vs 45#

People, esp those who have had some or a lot of success with other equipment, pick up a trad bow and feel or think the weapon is the limitation. IT IS NOT. The limitation is the ability of the hunter to position themselves so they can make the shot. That is not hating on any other weapon it simply is what it is, imo. If you ask me who the better hunter is, the guy that killed 3 bucks over 150 with a rifle, compound or crossbow all shot at distances of 40-50 yards or greater or the guy that killed 3 does with a selfbow inside 15 yards, I'm taking the latter. That is not to diminish the others success, the selfbow guy just demonstrated a higher level of hunting skill. The hunt is about getting close enough to make a clean shot, regardless of weapon choice. My personal exception being long range rifle, that's just shooting. The killing happens when the hunt ends and the animal is in position. It's the thing that is missing on some folks that think you cant have a successful hunt without a kill and that, again imo, couldnt be further from the truth. The hunter makes the decision of whether or not to take the life separate from the hunt.
Very interesting perspective, thanks for sharing that!

I agree with this. I’ve committed 100% to only carrying my stick bow this year. I did it for half of last season and it was humbling. I had many encounters with bucks at 25-40 yards, which is a chip shot with my compound. I had never thought about how much different it was to set up for a 20 yard or closer shot versus just needing to be within 40 or so. It certainly wasn’t the weapon for me, it was me needing to skill up another level on setting up in the perfect spot vs a “good” spot.

There is something very special for me and a metric ton of nostalgia when I draw, release and hear that one of a kind crack of a 2 blade broadhead smacking into a deer out my recurve. Which was also my dad's first bow. My daughter, 10 years old, explained it to me one time like this. "It sounds like when you smack a slice of bologna against the wall." My response was "When in the hell did you do that?" That said she was fairly spot on

There just isn't much, if any, difference in performance between 40 or 45 lbs on deer sized game....shoot the weight you can handle in such a way that YOU control when to release the arrow not the bow due to not being able to hold comfortably long enough....I've killed deer with bows from 40 lbs to 55 lbs and they all worked just fine.....
