Thoughts on a good headlamp. Seldom use a light going in or out morning or night. Tripped and fell on my ass coming out tonight. I’m ok just always felt a light would spook deer ( falling down surly spooked them..lol Heard red light doesn’t spook them. I need some advice on a good light setup.

Petzl Tactikka. Has three levels of white light brightness and red light. I only use the white light when tracking and always use red to go in/out. I do find that I spook less deer using the red light. Cruzer has some nice Black Diamond lamps on his page that I’m looking at to boost the lumens. You might look into those.

Do a search for headlamp posts, there’s tons. Here’s mine I asked awhile back. I settled on a coast which I really like:

Cool! I’m seriously looking!

If you look at Fenix flashlights, you can find ones that have a spot and flood light and low, med, hi, and turbo settings on either flood or spot. The low flood is good for not spooking/setting up close, but the things are very bright when needed. It makes a handheld flashlight unnecessary. I like the ones with battery in the back and strap across top of head because they ride so much nicer on the head. Light is so important to me that this is an area I'm not minimalistic. I carry a Petzl Zipka as emergency backup.

I like this one. Three colors (I like green better than red) and high / low setting. Rechargeable. Can use either the headband or hat clip.

This is what you seek. From 1-1100 lumens on white, 1-230 lumens on red. It's awesome.

Totally agree with you, I like the green light alot better then red, it's a little bit brighter for walking purposes yet it doesn't spook game. Also you can still see bright eyes with the green light if you have marked trees or trails. I use an old Cabelas Alaskan guide headlamp. Not the best bright light for trailing but the green is awesom for walking and setting up.

Just as an aside, I don’t think lights spook deer that badly. Ask any of the big bucks who get killed between the hours of 10pm and 2am in September. I do sometimes use a 50lumen flashlight that is tucked in a pocket on my bino harness for really tight stand entry and exits though. I put it in a pocket on the side of the harness pointing down and turn it on. When it shines through the fabric you have about a 5 lumen spot light right at your feet that allow you to see one step at a time.

I’m a big fan of the HM65R from Fenix. Uses 18650 batteries and lasts a looong time, not to mention how bright it is. I carry a spare battery as well which will get me all night to get out of the woods if need be.

That looks like a very nice light!

I have been using a zebra light for several seasons now. The user interface is superb. I love it but I do miss a red light some.

Zebralight is the king. I love mine. It's goes crazy bright for deer tracking. Very dim for the walk in. Then extremely dim moonlight mode just enough to see my hands as I climb the tree. Battery life has been tremendous and the choice of light color and beam pattern is second to none

This is what I use. I carry a flashlight every single day of my life that uses an 18650 so using a headlamp that is compatible is a no brainer.

I have a similar one and have considered the zebralights also (but they seem a bit too complicated/programmable for my needs).

I think it is best to have this type of light if there is any possibility of getting lost/run into danger and if getting lost could be really bad.

If someone hunts private only and it is a short walk in and out, then I'd probably have a tiny minimalist light. So, a lot depends upon how someone hunts and where.

I almost got one but all of them seemed a bit too complex for my needs (programmable I guess by pushing and holding the buttons). If I found a simple one from them, I'd probably buy it to try out.
