Thermocell or don’t go. I’ve tried skin so soft, organic with eucalyptus and lemon grass… I’ve tried deep woods and off (they work until they dry into your skin real good or until you sweat heavily). I even got desperate because of sand gnats and tried vanilla extract none of it worked for more than 15 minutes. Off kept mosquitos down but gnats acted like it wasn’t there. Permithirin keeps ticks off but did nothing for mosquitoes… My thermocell takes a little while to warm up but once you’re in the tree and it’s glowing good, you might get bit 3 or 4 times in 4 hours. You can’t beat that. Down here our mosquitoes bite through your hammock while wearing pants and base layers. They are vicious lolIn Maryland I only carried it while scouting last year, now that I'm on my quest to balance minimalist, the Thermacell is something I really want to leave if possible. I know I know, you boys from the south think Thermacell is the greatest thing in the world. But I really hate carrying it around and replacing the cartridges.
I'm thinking about just spraying repellants as I leave the car. Wife been using this 'organic' bug repellant on the kids made from lime juice and vinegar which I find pretty tolerant and effective. But never used it on the field yet. But I'm open to commercial product too.
I'm not adverse to wearing netting to cover my head and neck, and I'm usually long sleeves no matter what. So the only skin exposure would be my hand. Does anyone just suck it up and ignore the bugs?
Thought? concerns?
Great another new method to try… lol I just wish gnats and mosquitoes would go extinct. Then my problems would be solvedCarmex works pretty well for gnats to and doesnt make me as hungry.
I haven’t noticed quality of the thermocell but I did have an issue with the butane cartridges in the past. Like they were watered down or something and wouldn’t burn very well. I bought a new pack and it solved that problem. But I too would not go out in the Florida woods or marshes without my thermocellHere in FL I’ve found no good alternative to Thermacells
In some swamps I’ll light up 2 of them
Skeeters done here are terrible so I wear a bug tamer mesh jacket to keep them at bay while walking in or out
I have several thermacells right now cuz quality has decreased over the years and newer ones aren’t as durable and will stop heating properly
I gotta test mine and figure out which ones to replace

Yea but that year round hog hunting thoughMan, the more I hear about hunting in the south make me glad I'm where I am. The cold sucks but at least I can get warm if I carry more layers....I was tempted to retire south for the hog hunting but man...the bugs stories that you guys tell are discouraging.
My nine year old: Dad, you know how you said everything has its place in ecosystems and how everything works together? Why was the mosquito created and what purpose does it serve?Great another new method to try… lol I just wish gnats and mosquitoes would go extinct. Then my problems would be solved
I told my son sand gnats (no-seeums) were put on this earth to annoy people. Lol I think they were actually created in a lab somewhere by chemical companies to make sure we would buy their productsMy nine year old: Dad, you know how you said everything has its place in ecosystems and how everything works together? Me: To protect hooved animals from all but the most insane humans.
It's really not that great. 98° sucks the desire to hunt right outta ya. I like to think I'm as hard-core as they come but I put a lot of work into finding some good summertime pig hunting, did it one season, and swore it off.Yea but that year round hog hunting though
Chum the river bank and shoot 'em from the canoe while you are running lines at night while it's cool. It's really not that great. 98° sucks the desire to hunt right outta ya. The key for me is late afternoon (public land) or night time predator hunts (on private land). I do agree when it’s upper 90’s and heat index of 106 hunting isn’t fun. It's really not that great. 98° sucks the desire to hunt right outta ya. We’ve done that a time or two as wellChum the river bank and shoot 'em from the canoe while you are running lines at night while it's cool.
Peeps back then used tactics some of which I'm not willing to use unless 100% unavoidable apocalypse time .....simple mud layers, sweet grass/dogfennel/etc rubbed on skin and worn on clothes, diy pine pitch repellent, gar fish oil/slime, and smoke like "cover scent peeps do now", plus u build a tolerance just like anything else....there's a will there's a way.I just always say “If Francis Marion could do it in wool, then I can too.”
