Am I the jerk?

Do you know for a fact he beat you to the spot first as you shine your light and didn’t see anything and if he was there first wouldn’t he say something or whistle. A buck grunt doesn’t mean it’s a human letting you know he is there he could have said something before hand before you got all the way up in a tree as 1 sticking isn’t always easy. Now shoot a buck and show him how’s it done!

Way I look at it is he could’ve said something and I’m sure you would have move no problem and you didn’t know he was there and getting down wouldn’t really ruin either your hunts it’s a damper tats for sure. It’s not likely deer gonna read the script. If their moving their moving. I have killed deer after setting up for a hour and moving 100 yards away

How about the possibility that the guy 30 yards away doesn't really care that you're setup close.

Been on both sides of this situation. I use a flash light and still had guys set up. That’s when I thought what a jerk. He helped me drag the deer to the truck though.
I will head the other way when I see or hear something human like where I’m headed.

I was re-reading the OP and you said you heard a buck grunt. Maybe he had a deer call and was signalling you. Songbird whistle as well.

Sure - but that's stupid.

Signal in a manner recognizable as human. Flashing light is probably the least intrusive, but the drawback is they need to be looking the right direction.

Piss poor signal if you ask me. Im sure that was his intent, but don't mimic the thing I'm after if you want me to move, shine a light or say hey there bud.

I agree with you. Light would have been best.

I'm only sure because there is no way he hooked a climber up and climbed that close without me noticing. Only 1 legal way to walk in or out of this area. I was late to the party.

Gotcha. Man that still sucks. Guess he wanted company and only 10 ft off ground with climber that’s weird why bother stay on the ground LOL

I had this happen once. But this was an afternoon setup so daylight and on private land that only I had permission to hunt. I walked in and “thought” I heard a whistle. Stopped, looked around and saw nothing. Headed about 20 more yards to my tree, freshening up a scrape on my way and thought I heard it again. So again looking around and passed it off as a bird. Hooked up to the tree and up I went. Pulled my bow up and set it, pulled my bag up and set it. Got my water out... looked up and this fella was no further than 15 yards across from me facing me, the deer trail between us. How I didn’t see him on my way up I don’t know. Why he didn’t say anything? I am assuming because he knew he wasn’t supposed to be there So I “whisper” across.... seeing anything?

he laughed and said nope. I said too late to move, which way do you think they are coming from. He pointed to the left and I said anything from the left is yours, anything from the right is mine. I would like to end the story with success but we didn’t get anything.

Man I'm glad we have alot of public or less hunters, or maybe cause we can park anywhere but only once have I walked in on someone and I've hunted public exclusively for 20 years

3 places within an hour that don't require a quota permit or reservation. I have to sign in to one place, but it has the best deer, the other two have multiple access points, but you have to park on paved surfaces. I miss being able to pull off on the side of the road where ever back home.

We have to sign in on public here too. It's a self checkout tag with two stubs. One goes in the box on the way in and the other on the way out.

I used to be a regular at one of the shooting ranges and talked with the wardens sometimes when they made their rounds. They've told me the reason for the check ins is to get a count of how many people are using the facilities for money allocation. The only thing that matters to the bean counters is the numbers. If not enough people are using the land they run the risk of losing funding for maintenance or at worst the land gets allocated for other uses

One time I was set up on the ground early in the afternoon. About 90 minutes later here comes a guy with his climber and sets up 50 yards from me. I was up the trail from him so I didn't say anything. Got to watch 3 deer bust him lol he had no idea I was there so when he started climbing down I got up and met him, turns out he knew my in-laws. We laughed about it walked back to our trucks and moved on. That's public for ya.

Only regret is I didn't shoot that 6 point. Had him at 5 yards. Would have been quite the show for that climber fella haha

Ha, Friday i had a 6pt headed my way, he stops at about 50 yards, I know there is a climber another 40 yards from him but the wind is really wrong and we still have 30 minutes of daylight. Well this buck is zeroed in on the climber for a few minutes then heads off into a thicket, and just as I'm scratching my head I see climber unhooking his stand and packing up because there hadn't been any activity all night...
