Another saddle accident

Maybe the vendors on here can organize?
IMHO something like this needs to happen in general. Saddle hunting has grown too quickly without any regulations to reign it in. And more importantly it needs to be organized by someone other than the vendors. Asking the vendors to do this would be like asking a recovering alcoholic to go pick up your booze at the liquor store. It needs to be independent to have the intended purpose.

Vendor representation for sure should be a part of it but yes I agree, not exclusively the vendor community. Similar to the TMA. @Fl Canopy Stalker discussed this last week or so and there already is some subset of the TMA working on saddle standards.

There are a whole lot of assumptions and blame being placed on both individuals and companies in this thread with very little information actually known and no concrete proof to support any of it other than the fact that he fell. Personally, I am incredibly skeptical of the claim that a carabiner just "broke", especially if there was no fall. Suspicious that the post is gone, suspicious that no photos of the faulty device in question were provided.

As I read this thread this is exactly what I thought. I am highly skeptical of what actually happened, if it even happened, without some more pictures.

I would put money on the biner wasn't locked, he twist3d in a way which laid a section of the rope over the gate, and pop...the end.

I'm glad he is OK. And wish him a speedy recovery.

I've hauled logs, telephone poles, boats, lumber, you Name it with a truck and 40 year old retired biners....never broke one.....

One sticking puts slack in your system on every move. Most demonstrations don't even show the use of a linemen's belt when climbing using this method. Some even climb above their attachment point when one sticking. That is my point. If you fall above your attachment point or on more than 6" of slack good luck especially if you are attached via mechanical ascender on an 8mm rope.
Well I use a linesman belt . I rather be safe than sorry. I also backup my GRIGRI Plus with a auto block. So basically it's the same as climbing up sticks. The rope I use is 9mm with a braking strength of 4665 lb. Like I said many times I been saddlehunting for longer than most and worked in the construction field at heights . I learned never take anything for granted and always check you equipment before each use. I known accidents can happen but if we're careful and pay attention to are equipment and what we are doing and take are time then saddle hunting and one sticking can be done safely.

Beware of Soc media............ Could be shenanigans by a competitor, or anti hunter. Do Carabiners actually SNAP???? I mean if they are close correctly??? Doesnt even seem possible,

One thing I have to say about the SH world. The craze for light gear is a lil silly. Cowboy up and carry some quality gear!

I completely agree. Though it’s not just saddle
Hunting. Advertising in general has gone out of control. We are constantly bombarded with pressure to upgrade to the latest and greatest. In our saddle hunting world there’s a fine line between developing a refined system and chasing the consumption rabbit.

The craze for lightest and cheapest coupled with people watching a few YouTube videos is a bad recipe. I have seen some amazingly frightening things posted in the Facebook groups. It has gotten particularly bad this season. I fully expect more stories of accidents.

I am mentoring a few folks this year and one of them, a guy who has never hunted and never climbed a tree, came to me telling me how he was going to one stick with a 5 step aider because he saw it on YouTube. I put him in a saddle at ground height and he struggled to keep from falling off the platform and when he did he couldn’t get back on without help. Now I am not knocking the guy. He legitimately wanted to learn and found a dozen videos of guys telling him that one sticking with a 5 step aider was easy. Luckily for him, he had a mentor who can dissuade him and coach him to keep him safe. Lot of guys are just gonna do what they see on YouTube and climb on the cheapest Chinese knockoff gear they can find on Amazon and end up hurt or worse.

I bought my tether and lineman's belt from Tethrd when I first got into saddle hunting. The screw gate on one of those carabiners (kind of a rose gold color with a gold gate) started acting up and screwing past the stop point. I've since replaced all biners I got from that order with Petzl biners (with the red open indicator) and retired those Tethrd ones to non-life supporting uses. It freaked me out since I couldn't tell who the manufacturer was and that it so quickly had issues. Being so many people are getting into saddles, and people being cheap, who knows what could have happened here!
I’m waiting on delivery of both the LB and tether from Tethrd. I was just researching carabiners and possibly upgrading (I’m not throwing stones at the company). Based on research I’ve done so far (!), I want screw locks, and cost isn’t a concern:

Questions:
  1. What’s the best biner for my tether connection to my Killdeer?
  2. What’s the best oval (I’m using a Kong Duck) biner for my LB?

Hopefully this isn’t a hijack, or resurrecting too old of a thread. I’m waiting on delivery of both the LB and tether from Tethrd. Do you know if they are still using the same types of carabiners? I’ve attached below screenshots of what are shown currently on the site.

I was just researching carabiners and possibly upgrading, so now I’m a bit more enthusiastic about doing so. Based on research I’ve done so far (!), I want screw locks, and the cost isn’t a concern:

Questions:
  1. What’s the best (and ideally taking into account weight) biner for my tether connection to my Killdeer?
  2. What’s the best oval (I’m using a Kong Duck) for my LB?

That looks like the same. I've now had another have that issue. They still lock, it's just the screw gate screws closed further than it originally did and exposes a lot of threads. I did not over torque them or anything neither, finger tight.

It could be I just got some goofy ones, they are 2 years old, and no one else has reported an issue. They probably still work fine, but that was enough for me to just buy name brand ones for my life supporting connections rather than take any kind of chance.

I agree wholeheartedly. Having vendors create the standards is a bad idea. It’s one thing for us to have input, but we shouldn’t be involved in implementing or creating the strength or safety rules. It’s too tempting for some to make the rules favor their particular saddle or make them lax enough that their own pocketbook is safer, not the end user.

The Kong binders are good, made in Italy. Got mine from doublesteps.com. Also the Force binders are nice, made in the USA. Very high KN rating, 31KN. Got mine from

Separate from knowing whether or not there actually was an equipment failure,..

Does Tethrd actually make their biners? Do they come with literature?

All I see on the website is

I don’t know for certain, but I have long thought that their current biners are made by Trango. I had some Trangos that were identical to theirs in all aspects other than Tethrd’s orangey-brown color scheme. Figured they may have a contract with them. But just a guess.

For me, no until i saw that documentation. Now it would be a likely no, easily answered by if they have the standards printed on the biner like all the others. Why not just select an optimal biner from the many available and do a deal with the mfg’er? I’m sure it’s fine, but i prefer my black diamonds the latitude guys built me, or the petzl autoblock (for SRT) i bought from REI. I like seeing all those CE marks and heiroglyphics knowing it meets standards since its life support.
