Any interest in a SRT video?

It's not hard. A couple hours of practice and you'll be fine taking it to the woods. I would recommend doing presets with paracord that you leave in the tree to cut down on throwing the line and pulling the rope in the dark

I wouldn't get rid of you stepps for SRT, it's a great climbing method but doesn't work very well for run and gun. It can be a challenge getting your throw line in the right spot without making any noise.

My concern is that you took your brake hand off of the tag end of the rope before securing it or adding some other form of backup. While it is cam'd over it is still an Assisted Braking Device (ABD). Which means just that, it is not an auto brake device. In fact based on the limited information I can find would suggest that the lifeguard is better at belaying because you can feed the rope out faster because it doesn't cam/grab the rope as quick as the grigri. I will typically use a runner to connect the hand ascender to my harness which will shorten your climbing stroke but it will keep you from a fall if the cam gets bumped and it will allow you to setup a tether or tie off the ABD so you can let go with the brake hand.

I tried finding the user manual for the lifeguard but couldn't, I use a grigri so I can really only speak to my specific ABD and what Petzl recommends but I'd rather make sure everyone is aware of the limitations than someone get hurt. I will happily bow down if I am wrong and I will try and find the manual tomorrow if I get a chance. Please be careful!

What is a runner? Can you describe or video how to use it?

I actually use a daisy chain but I dont use it like a daisy chain a runner would do the same thing.

I did just realize that I forgot to mention the panic prevention something i think the mad rock lifeguard has, which for this application should just make it easier to stop the rappel. It's supposed to help prevent a fall from someone that doesn't know how to belay.

I plan on doing the first method she shows in this video. Simple and cheaper and less metal to clang around(Honestly, it's mostly because I spent way too much money on climbing methods this year.). I plan on making my own sling with some webbing i have left over from making an aider. https://ropeguerrilla.org/2014/02/25/diy-webbing-slings/

That should work, another key point is to always have 2 connections(life line's, etc) at all times, or attachments to your rope. Also notice after her ABD(Grigri in this case) she is using the clove hitch as a backup to that device. If you are going to take your brake hand off you need some sort of backup.

Can I ask what knot you have tied with your longer bridge to your bridge connections on your saddle..I notice it doesnt have caribiners...I got the original bridge for my kestrel and I'm thinking of using it

Sorry I just saw your post. It's the same knot that was tied on one side of the bridge. The other end had a carabiner. I just removed the carabiner and tied the bridge on both sides. I think it's a figure 8 on a bite?? Not positive. I'll check it when I get back home from this work trip and let you know. When I find it I'll post a link to the video I used to tie it.

Sounds good sir! I just dont want to use caribiners on my bridge..I'd just like to tie it in on both sides..thanks!

Yeah I took mine off to avoid noise. But it also saves weight. Once you have your bridge length dialed in I like a fixed bridge

I used this knot with the rope bridge that came with my kestrel and it ended up being the perfect length with no cutting of the rope

We're at the camp this week.
Took time to practice SRT at midday.
We got a lot more comfortable ascending and rappelling down.
Definitely worth the effort.
Preset will be key. Also a glove when rappelling is a plus.
Hope to make a SRT hunt soon.

Thats awesome! Im glad its going good for you. It gets easier every time you do it. And once you get used to packing SRT gear it is really disappointing when you have to carry a set of sticks anywhere lol

So between this and the DRT thread, I’m really intrigued with these types of options instead of sticks. Being cheap and in good shape, is it unreasonable to think you could safely climb a single rope setup with just a friction hitch to your bridge? My thought is it’d be like rope climbs in gym class- feet clasping the rope and pulling up by hand, but with safety from the (tended) friction hitch.
