Any interest in a SRT video?

So between this and the DRT thread, I’m really intrigued with these types of options instead of sticks. Being cheap and in good shape, is it unreasonable to think you could safely climb a single rope setup with just a friction hitch to your bridge? My thought is it’d be like rope climbs in gym class- feet clasping the rope and pulling up by hand, but with safety from the (tended) friction hitch.

Yes, friction hitches are very light and quiet. As long as you have a method to get back down I think it works great. I usually use mad Rock safeguard belay device and a friction hitch with a foot loop above that to SRT. Of course I've only done that in my backyard I haven't tried it in a hunting situation yet. I do it like the third method in her video.

You can't just alternate unloading and sliding the two friction hitches down the rope to descend? Is it because they could bind up and now you're stuck?

Definitely would recommend a belay device that can accept 2 ropes so you can loop around a branch rappel with both ropes then quickly retrieve the rope, nothing better for getn out quickly and quietly, although its rare that i get to hunt a tree where this works lol

Yup, I agree, I use a madrock safeguard backed up with a prusik above. But not in some people's budget.

what rope are you using for your main line. You have 50 ft of it. I would guess 60 feet just to get to 30 feet high.

I just did some practice...man am I a rookie:eek::eek: . I have a safeguard. I have my back up prussic under and by my waist on my right hand side, clipped to my right bridge loop. That's how I was taught at the Mass-a paluzza.

Not sure who your question was directed at but you don't need twice the hunting height rope length for SRT. I use a 40' mainline (really more like 38' with a figure 8 on a bite). Using a throw line or pre set paracord I can easily get to 30'.

Correction, backup prusik below belay device,. Prusik with foot loop above. I tried ropeman 1 on upper, and I like prusik with carabiner better.

I should make a video showing rope walking and show you an efficient way to climb. With Richard's Mumford's Mini Saka and a foot ascender you can fly up the rope but of course you will need a device(multi cender hybrid) and some good instruction. I am going to be setting some presets next week and will refine my system. I plan on ascending and descending of course with my device (I shall leave unnamed because I don't want anyone trying it without some serious experience) and then using a tree tether to connect at my final hunting height. I then use rare earth magnets to pull up pack where I can stow my climbing line and then pull my bow up.

Maybe if someday I host a gathering I can show some rec tree climbing techniques that could be applied to saddle hunting. I am getting on in age and really like be connected throughout the entire climb/hunt and completion of the descending. There are some considerations concerning tie in points and SRT that I hope you guys will give some serious consideration because sometimes force vectors do surprising things especially when tieing off at the base of a tree and running you line up and over a branch. If you just cinch around branch/ trunk you are still 1:1.

AKA auto-block - this is how I operate as well

I tried SRT last week using what I had, a Ropeman and an ATC and some climbing knowledge I learned on Youtube. I got up to 10 feet. It was slow, but manageable. I considered a prussic on the ATC to be mandatory. A chest strap to keep my upper body more vertical would also be nice.
I was in shorts and used a few slings on my feet.

I'm a complete rookie so take this for what it's worth. My first couple of climbs we must have been doing the same thing. My foot in the foot loop just wanted to flail around and go sideways instead of up. I then started using a 2x4 stud (tree substitute) to put my foot against, and it was suddenly much easier (I was climbing inside my garage).

I'm a complete rookie as well. I was free ascending in open space so no where to brace my foot against. I later saw a video where the SRT climber had a loose loop around his neck with a carabiner that the ascending rope passed through to keep his body more vertical so the leg pressure could be downwards so have greater climbing effect. I took my climbing stick aider made from webbing which I decided not to use for now and looped it three times to form a neck loop which I will try on my next SRT attempt. I will not try anything stupid. Maybe a chest loop is safer.

Climbing and ropes around my neck is a hard no from me........
