Ar build

Okay. So let's say I hypothetically where to purchase a 450 BM for an AR. What kinda scope would you guys run on it? Not gonna do a lot of shooting. Sight it in. Hunt with it. Durable..nothing fancy. What kinda range can you be accurate with a red dot? I got a BSA muzzleloader scope I might toss on it for this year. Will keep an eye out for a deal later on something else I think. What would you look for?

I have a 450 upper and started with a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x28. Shot great and I really liked it... until I tried hunting with it. The small objective lense did not allow much light in so it sucked in that first or last 30-45 minutes of hunting hours. I did use that optic to take two deer and a black bear but decided to change based on the poor low light performance.

The Leupold VX-Freedom 450 Bushmaster scope is what I went with. 3-9x40 so it has the same performance as most hunting scopes and has an elevation dial calibrated to the most common 450 BM load, the 250 grain Hornady. No, it does not account for atmospheric changes that impact ballistics but my longest shot is about 150 yards and it works.

Typical range of red dot is around 100 yards. I have a Vortex spitfire AR on my AR that I really like for a red dot. For a long tube scope I have a Vortex diamondback I swap on it. It has low glass dispersion which helps with low light shooting and didn’t break the bank for cost. It’s definitely for longer distances.

I have a 3moa dot on my "work gun", with .223 a 50yd zero gets me a 300yd MPBR assuming a SAPI-plate-size target. I've shot it out to 300yd at 12" steel gongs. A 450BM will have different ballistics and consequently a different MPBR but you can absolutely get hits out to 300yd with a smaller red dot.

That said, I've really come to appreciate the 2-7 Nikon shotgun scope on my .444 Marlin. Generous eye relief, good light transmission, more than enough magnification to pick out a vital zone in thick brush. Nikon is out of the sport optics business but a well-stocked gun counter should have a couple of shotgun scopes you could manhandle.

I rifle hunt just like I bow hunt so I’ve started taking my AR. I have the same Spitfire AR on it and I’m very happy with it.

So I guess I should give an update on it......I started developing a failure to feed issue. So my buddy polished the lips. It has only gotten worse. I took it to a gun smith who was confident he could fix whatever issue there was. 3 days later he calls and says he can't figure it out. He says he tried everything minus starting to modify things. So I emailed bear Creek to see what my options are. We'll see. I got bad luck. On the positive side my super complicated single shot tombstone skulled a hog at 80ish yards. I could still my thumb inside the exit down to the base of my hand. Hopefully this all gets resolved before gun season starts

With a 350 Legend?

I suspect it is a magazine related issue. I purchased the magazine below from a local gun maker that machines out the mage with the notch in the pics below. I've never had a feeding issue.

From what I read on the interwebs the cmmg mags like the 1s I bought are the least problematic. If bear creek says I'm outta luck I will start grinding stuff

Great Lakes Firearms and Ammunition (GLFA) is where I bought my upper and mags from. I just checked their website and don't see any 350 Legend mags. However, when I was talking with the owner while buying my upper, he said they customized the mags because of feeding issues related to 350 Legend. So I bought one and haven't been disappointed.

What is happening with the FTF? Most AR malfunctions are from the magazine. Had one with a loose gas key impinging on the gas tube. Had another undergassed, swapped for and adjustable gas block which solved it. Have you tried different brands of ammo? Sometimes with somewhat esoteric cartridges you can run into some variations in dimensions.

I don't know anything about anything.....but the gunsmith I took it to has years and years of experience.....if he can't get it to work then I don't know what to tell ya.

The said he check the gas system, swapped all the components he had available in house to swap, etc etc, and he couldn't get it to function correctly..

After firing the first round after initial loading the 2nd round may load but that 3rd round is for sure hung up. The nose hangs up entering the chamber and the bolt slams and dents the bullet
