Athens Archery Closing Down

It is sort of mind boggling that Athens wouldn't be certain they were ok before bringing their system to market. I'm curious what is going to happen with mountain view products.
I completely agree. I’m wondering if they have a potential action against their own counsel. Something just seems off. Nobody is that naive anymore.

It appears that Mathews Archery tried to settle with Bowtech prior to the lawsuit. It’s hard for me to believe that Athens’ corporate counsel wouldn’t have suggested some kind of resolution or settlement offer prior to shuttering its doors. Obviously, hardball begets hardball. In the end, it’s best for all consumers to have options. There is now one less option.

There were 6 years of legal negotiations between Mathews and Bowtech prior to the lawsuit, according to the article.

Granted... I don't know much about this case, but the decision to close down kinda seems like a "keep the earnings we've made instead of paying out to bowtech, because there's no way we win the lawsuit" kinda move.
I agree but that model doesn’t seem to value any existing and future business and sales opportunities they seemed to be experiencing. It’s almost like an excuse.

I think it was just the final nail on the coffin. Some of the comments on AT made it seem like business was not doing well overall either way. Which I can see, I hear some more vocal supports from the community but that might not equal to $$$ in the bank account.

I can see that point and its very valid. Its like insider trading where you don't want dealers trying to unload stocks before the value nose dive. But that's going to happen regardless. Athens bows are going to be discounted, but dealers are going to have PARTS that they can't move.
Why couldnt they sell parts unless there's a legal issue? Replacement parts for discontinued items are made of gold to some people.

I do believe there is a legal issue with supplying parts too. My deer rifle is a Marlin MR-7 chambered in 30-06 that I bought in the late 90's. Unfortunately it was only produced for 3-4 years before production was stopped due to some patent infringements.

I love the rifle and it shoots great but there are no replacement parts (specifically magazines) available for it. I'm extremely careful with the magazine now because I worry what will happen if I ever lose my current one.

I guess there would be a lot like-new parts shortly on eBay then

I was once in a similar situation, lost a mag to an obsolete rifle that belonged to my father, so I called Numrich Gun Parts… they have almost anything.. they had what I needed and when I asked how much they literally asked what I was willing to pay for it… I can’t remember what that stunt cost me but I got the mag and gave the rifle back to my dad and told him I would use something else from now on, this was just some cheap .22 and I remember thinking I just paid more for a mag than the rifle was worth.

A compound bow is a fairly simple device with few parts involved. So, every major bow manufacturer has as many patents as possible to protect their designs and they all file patents on different designs to keep other bow manufacturers from making new technology. There isn't really any room for a new bow manufacturer to design, build and sell bows without infringing on some other bow manufacturer's patent. And by the time you pay the royalties for using other bow manufacturer's technology, you won't make enough money to stay in business.

Small cookie cutter bow companies just don't stand much of a chance unless they get lucky and develop some new technology and can file a patent and pimp out the technology and make money off of the royalties. Royalties are a big part of any successful bow manufacturer's income.

The days of cheap parts from Numrich are long gone. Literally better off buying a second rifle for parts.

Oh man I loved Numrich when I was still deep in the gun world. They had the best deal on some of the hardest parts to find. Havn't been there lately, something changed?

I used to buy parts there too but it got to a point where it seemed like every time I went to look for something the prices were just getting silly.

To be fair to them though, the cheap guns I grew up with were largely made in the 50’s-70’s. There aren’t nearly as many of them around these days driving the price for parts up. Not to mention the reoccurring shortages and millions of new gun owners
