Best ring of steps??

Sorry to bump an s thread but what number of steps does everyone prefer for their ROS since I’m now diving down this new rabbit hole

I use 6, but could get away with less.
The squirrel steps are light so I haven’t worried about it.

I run five. The only time I touch all five is when the deer come out from a completely different spot than whereI expect them to.

When you are using 5-6 steps, are you using the top of your stick as well, or just the steps?

Like the majority, I use 5. I use 2 close to each other but not touching at 3 & 9 and another at 6. The two about an inch apart allow me to treat it like a platform for long sits to avoid pressure points.

I wish I was a headlight on a north-bound train

Squirrel steps have a cult-like following, most likely for very good reason. Bear in mind that I am late to the game 100% of the time as it relates to saddle hunting things, other than the saddle itself (been in one since 2009). I am sure to own a set of SS in the future. For now, I use Treehopper ROS and it is a great option. Something to consider is what boots your dad hunts with. If he leans in his saddle (more weight on his feet), and uses soft soled rubber boots (I use Lacrosse here in the swamps of Florida) then SS may not be the preferred option because even a short sit may cause discomfort because there isn't much to displace his pressure/weight on the step. There are ways to mitigate this, buy (pun intended) using more steps on the ROS or grouping multiple steps closer together on the strap.

If I lived where I could wear hard soled boots I would already have SS, they dominate other ROS with respect to the data sheet.

I use Ameristeps on a Treehopper ratchet. I had those steps for a longtime and they aren't the recall steps.

i have used the Bullman ratchet steps now for 2 years. Yesterday I used my top Wild Edge step with 2 more WE steps set level. This is the best option for me so far! Not as fast as the ratchet to setup but much more comfortable in my opinion. I use 4 steps on the bullman with my top WE step in the middle of them, just 2 inches lower.

If 3.4 pounds is too much for you so be it. I’m not concerned about weight though. I want something that will be solid on any bark tree and the Saddle Scaffold is the only one that can do it.
