Canoe rebuild

I was going to make a fancy pvc pipe rack/water storage thing until I saw how much the couplings cost...... Then I looked around in the shed and found some PT lumber. It will store the canoe while not in use and easy to throw in the bed and strap it down.IMG_20191231_155219_5.jpg

looks perfect to me. You could throw a tarp over it and sleep in the back if you wanted too as well!

Been there, done that. I would much rather paddle. To me a motor negates the main advantage of a canoe, which is simplicity and dependability. I have 2 gas motors, 2 trolling motors, and a buddy with a torqueedo I can borrow. I paddle unless I am pleasure-cruising with my wife and a cooler full of beer, and even then I still paddle probably 70% of the time.

If I offer u a free trolling motor and battery would u turn it down?....I got 2 kids and a wife with beer cooler...trolling motor will be a welcome addition

I agree with u....it will only go on select trips but if it's a family weekend on the water it'll probably go
50w flexible marine solar panel mounted on top of a cooler with a cheap solar controller goes a LONG way to maintaining battery power and recharging when paddling, anchored and fishing, or eating lunch.

If I had to use it, yes. Lol. Just not my thing.

We got us a got dang canoe poet on our hands, boys.....

If I bring a cooler of Miller Lite, a trolling motor and a battery can we just leave the battery and TM on the bank while you paddle me around? We could go 7 miles out and back. Sonnet’ll be great!

Never thought about that before.....I'll look into it. Thanks

I will most likely be doing that with my wife this weekend. She likes to canoe, but hates to paddle.

A buddy of mine is gonna help me do some testing this summer. We both have 17ft Grumman canoes. I want to make a few trips with him using a trolling motor and me using a paddle to see if what I suspect is true. I believe I can paddle faster and farther than a trolling motor and battery combo, especially if the water is shallow, thick, and crooked. A paddle just generates so much more thrust than a trolling motor. But, a motor is a steady hum, whereas a paddle is a large pulse. I think he might have an edge on open water or in a strong current. Maybe.

I have used a 35lb thrust MinnKota on my 17 ft Grumman and if you can out paddle that then you rock! It's been a while but my memory is that it cooks right along. You are correct though that if you're going into shallow water or weed choked water the paddle definitely wins.

Solo paddling flat water, zero breeze will be faster. Any bit of breeze or chop and the motor is more efficient. Mugh of your stroke is used to correct direction of travel, where as the motor creates constant consistent momentum.
Now, tanden paddling with someone who knows what their doing in each position is a different story and will beat the trolling motor. In this case I believe drag comes much more into play, and with two paddlers twice as much momentum is created.

Zero doubt you can further. Before I got better access I would run my sneak boat up river 5 miles to hunt. I ALWAYS had to paddle back 3/4’s of the way

I heel the boat over pretty aggressively, which drastically reduces wetted surface, and for whatever reason almost negates the need for a corrective stroke when going straight. I also paddle at least once a week, and have the advantage of youth and hard-headedness.

I've told him I can beat him, therefore I must!

I think we're going to do an overnighted or a two night route that will take us up and downstream, through some narrow waterways, and across some larger water. We'll try to run loaded and then make some side excursions with just us and our propulsion methods. Should be a good time. I'll be sure to update yall.

You wouldn’t keep up with my sneak boat to start with. 56# TM and it will throw a wake. But, long term it will be like the tortoise and the hare and you’ll overtake him.

I've never had a trolling motor....it's a 50lb thrust. It has a broke tilt bracket so it was free. It says 1.5 hours on speed 5 and 10 hours and speed 1. Are these good numbers to go by? Once I get the bracket to put it on the canoe made and fix the tilt bracket I will need to start testing the battery range.
