Canoe rebuild

IMO, it all comes back to what you want to do. If you're wanting to enjoy the day with no concern for speed, paddling will be more enjoyable imo. If you're wanting to go up river 1.5 miles to hunt and then come back with a deer, cart, stand, and possibly a partner in crime, i'll carry the weight for a trolling motor and battery all day every day.

One thing to look at is a lithium ion battery. A fraction of the weight and way better source for power.

I’m also in the Craigslist Canoe club. I got one that a forklift punched a hole in. Epoxy and Camo gorilla tape have been working well for 4 years now. But don’t be like me and take it two miles across a big lake. I was fine until the wind got up and I encountered 3 foot waves. The waves were picking the bow up real high and then slamming it down and then picking the stern up so high the trolling motor propeller came out of the water! I was praying out loud. Real loud! But the waves just kept getting bigger. That last wave picked the bow up so high that the stern went underwater. The canoe capsized about 400 yards from shore. I was swimming for land when a jet boat picked me up. We recovered everything except 4 poles and the tackle box. I’m usually smarter than that. Thankful the Lord took care of me.

So far the worst worst experience I've had while in a paddle power vessel was disturbing a 8-10ft bull shark while fishing on a sit on top kayak is roughly 16" of water way back in the skinny water.....it was just trying to get away but bumped the boat and about flipped me.

My dad and I used to fish together from a 10ft jonboat and we had a gator swim up that had a couple feet on the boat. It didn't do anything but investigate and swim off but it was a rush for both of us

I grew up fishing in South Georgia swamps with my dad in a canoe. Gators and water moccasins everywhere. But that shark you mentioned sounds terrifying!

Here's an idea some may want to consider: I strap a 48 quart cooler on either side of my canoe with an aluminum platform across the canoe. It adds enough stability that I can confidently stand on the platform for bowfishing.

Got pics? I've wondered about rigging something like that out of 2 buckets.

I was gonna copy this setup.....I like that they can be raised up with this design.....crab trap buoy, pvc pipe, and some scotty rod holders

Canoe cooler stabilizers:
I have rope loops to secure the System to the canoe. I Are use cam buckle straps to hold the aluminum platform down to the canoe and cam buckle straps to hold Each cooler to the aluminum platform. And one cam buckle strap attached to the front handle on each cooler so it doesn’t slide out of the strap holding it to the platform as the canoe is moving forward. This adds so much stability that I can stand up on the aluminum platform and bow fish from it. I can also stand up while I’m fishing.ABB1EECD-8B74-44E2-9EB1-43BE8FAE5C9A.jpegBEA2BD2B-D0C3-47A5-90E3-3677BB8EA1EF.jpeg67D54341-D0B4-436A-9EF3-61DC2AF3FD1F.jpeg51969CC7-2842-480F-92A7-C9189C6C07BD.jpeg7EC13C96-38CF-4C2D-ADA0-0C4B3D3EE76B.jpegF16EA0A7-1776-4D47-908F-A277C3CD1EEE.jpeg

Was thinking of mounting one of these to a board that could then simply be clamped to my center support beam. The outrigger would just be a crab pot float like a lot of folks a using. I go with the adjustable scotty mounts but they are plastic and somewhat expensive to me. You do however get that 3rd degree of rotation with the scotty mounts.

Trash to treasure canoe anchors....9 cuts and 2 holes
I'm planning on having an anchor front and rear so I can set up cross current in case I got others fishing with me.....View attachment 28555
Just put on your PFDs and tie milk jugs to your tackle box & poles before anchoring both ends cross current. Just saying...

Also quick disconnect with the scotty.....
