Considering One Sticking

EWO 15" stick with UP Platform, Backwoods 3-step sewn aider, 40ft Bluewater Argon dynamic rope, madrock safeguard, figure 8 as a backup.

I do not exclusively one-stick. Just like I don't exclusively saddle hunt. It is just one "tool" in my tool box. I always recommend that people try to take a similar approach when selecting how they want to hunt a certain area. i.e., don't feel that you have to one-stick all the time, just add it to your tool box.
Great point. As you said, I’m considering it a tool in my arsenal. I’ll have some presets on my private land and would likely keep my Skeletors just in case. Thanks for replying!

After fooling around with a few different sticks I too ended up with an EWO stick. It’s rock solid and so well built. At 225 I’m not a huge guy but with all my gear I’m more like 240ish and needed a stick that wouldn’t budge. I’ve tried damaging this stick and haven’t been able too yet. I use the angled UP platform on top as it has enough real estate for my size 13 boots and also allows me to turn around on top or cam off the side. I use just the plain lower step and a backwoods mobile three step sewn aider with 15” spacing. With that combo I can get 20’ quickly no problem. I also rappel down; I use oplux with a safeguard and use the rappel line as my tether also. At height I back up the safeguard with a prusik. I still keep a linemans belt on my saddle just in case. I try to keep things as simple as possible.

I like your set up. With the big platform on top and the step on the bottom do you have any issues steping up on the platform? Questioning the overhang of the platform.

Nope. At least not yet I haven’t. I may play around with the larger bottom step at some point in the future as I’m afflicted with the tinker bug but this setup works so I might just leave well enough alone. My stick has 15” spacing so I think that helps. If my stick was shorter I might get hung up or catch the platform trying to step up but that 15” of distance gives me enough room to get my boot swung out and up.

I'm considering moving to the One Sticking method next season. I'm compiling a list of things to get over the next couple of months to practice with before seasons start in Sept 2023. If you currently use the one stick method, list your current load out. Interested to see what everyone is doing. Thanks in advance!
I use the Trophyline Wingman for my platform with a sewn on two step aider w/ step from EWO. I’m going to use the Mammut Smart 2.0 next season as I could not get my hands on a mad rock nor did I want to pay that price.

Just got into one sticking late this season: canyon c-iv, madrock, ewo stand offs, harken cam cleat, ewo 15” stick, ewo bottom step with 3-step sewn aider, using an angled monarch on the top. I’d played around with a modded hawk first and the proper set up is light years better, at least for me.

I hadn't considered the Trophyline, thanks for that one! I've been watching some videos on the Mammut, its an interesting piece

More love for the EWO. I'm still considering that one and selling some current gear or going Thethrd One and aider with my Predator I currently own. Too many options haha

I've got a Rebel Fab 1-stick with an UltimAider and cam cleat, and a Jumbo GearTie for a handle. I use a bungee ball to keep the UltimAider triced up and the EWO aider chafing guards. My climbing routine may be a bit unorthodox; I'm in an RCH with a Drey instead of a conventional saddle. I climb on my descent line, Sticht hitch to belay loop via carabiner. I tend out my slack as I climb. Once I've tended out all my slack and my Sticht is at my Delta link, I throw on my flipline for stability while I go hands-free and set my tether, take another step, disconnect and re-set my descent line, re-set my stick, and continue climbing. I've got a 2' sling on my belay loop that my tether goes to, so I only have one 'biner on my belay loop, and thus prevent 'carabiner confusion'. Once I'm at height I hang from my tether in my Drey, re-set and tend some slack into my descent line, and install my figure-8. I haul up my pack, which I've tied to the tag end of my descent line, and my bow. Descent is in reverse except I lower my pack and weapon together (or just drop my pack and lower my weapon on my rap line). I put 40' of Dynaglide throwline on a dog leash, which I use to both haul up my weapon and haul down my Delta link.

When I climb on my Recon the method is the same except I have a short bridge and long bridge - actually just made one really long tubular webbing bridge, then tied the ends together on the outside of one of the plates, to make a short bridge.

So, loadout:
1-stick with Ultimiader as above
45' C-IV rap line
12' tether
12' flipline
Figure-8
Carabiners
Hitch cord
2' sling made from 1" tubular webbing
Delta link
Dog leash w/throwline
4' of light twine 'dummy cord' so I can't drop my paperback- clips into carabiner on tether with my bridge
MOLLE waist pack to hold everything (except the RCH, which won't fit with battle belt and pouches attached).
Leather gloves for rappelling

I'll probably upgrade the bungee ball to the aider wrap - pack-n-play, I think - this season, but that's a "luxury upgrade" and not a necessity.
