Deboning\Packing out in Louisiana

While we’re on the point of LA law - any knowledge on the legality of pulling off the interstate to walk into WMAs? Some of them border the interstate and itd be easy access.

That’s a no not legal, it’s not legal to stop and get out and walk on any interstate in LA though I see people doing it. I used to hunt the ACC and it runs along i49 and I’ve asked that before and that’s how I found out ACC was boat access only from the St. Landry exit boat ramp. Not soo sure about state highways I believe it’s ok on those, but interstate or anything over 65 or 70mph is illegal. And also WMA access is at a point or several points for reason bc you’re supposed to “check in” to and while on a WMA.

Thanks for the info. I figured it was NOT legal, but I see people pulling off for Maurepas and others... Not legal doesn't mean much in LA.

Yeah and true it’s not legal but realistically, how many state troopers would pass a parked truck and sit and wait for a guy to come out from hunting, you’d dang near have to be caught red handed lol but yes lawbreakers are rampant everywhere, petty mostly but hey, crazy world it is. I would not be fun dragging a deer in the open to your truck people passing, and a state boy waiting on you :) funny from here but definitely not fun.

unrelated to state troopers and kinda was red handed, but someone i knew on sherburne used an atv to retrieve a doe in a non atv zone...but he messed up and left his ramps on his tailgate and a LDWF truck passed by and then sat there and waited for him to get back and ticket him. yes his fault...thats actually the 1000$ doe i mentioned earlier in this thread....by the time he went back to court and paid that fine and processing fees, that deer cost him right under 1000$

And to re iterate it’s only interstates, i10, i20, i49. State highways if I remember right you must be off the shoulder in grass (not ditch it) and possibly just ill advised.

i remember reading a funny story about LDWF catching a guy deer hunting at night, trespassing on private land, with out-of-season weaponry while in possession and under the influence of meth. I thought: that is Louisiana in a nutshell.
that is unfortunately a pretty accurate description lol

I just got a generic copy and paste from the rule book.....how do u guys interprete that?View attachment 93022

How that reads is I can down a deer, gut it and drag out, once I’m at camp or at whatever point I quarter or breakdown the animal each peice must be marked as stated and be together with itself, once processed it’s all broken down. But that’s why I don’t quarter in the field bc I’m not marking each peice, goes to the house and gets quartered and brought down the road to processor. And if I’m at the camp for extended stay it gets deboned at the camp and goes on ice. But also that says before reporting. So by read I’d say if it’s validated and tagged so as you please. Unless it states elsewhere.

1 of them says the evidence of sex must remain ON and the other says must remain WITH. That kinda makes a difference right? So if u quartered u would leave the no no parts skin flap attached for it to remain ON? Maybe easier to leave the hide with privates on 1 of the hams?

I’ve always known it as just leave the head with everything until it goes in the freezer. I usually just throw it in the icechest with the quarters and bring that to processor. The whole ON or WITH I think is their way of saying regardless the head better be with the meat or parts.

Some people use the app but I print a paper harvest report. U fill out the paperwork before moving from the point of recovery (I'm assuming that's what they mean by logging it) and then u got 24 hours to either get online or call to an automated service and they issue u a confirmation # (I'm assuming that's what they mean by reporting it) and u write that confirmation # on the harvest report

So, according to the regulations, once it's reported and you have the confirmation number, why can't you just bring the meat out? The regs say you have to have proof of sex prior to reporting it.

Yeah....I'm not sure. Hopefully this weekend I bump into an officer so I can ask a person face to face. I usually don't have service and that's why I do the paper harvest report

I spoke to A Federal Game Warden today about the regulations on the National Wildlife Refuges. Called them on the phone. He told me you can field dress an animal as long as you don't leave the carcass/remains next to a trail or road.

Agent's Name Was Pon Dixon. Spoke to him at 10:43 a.m. CDT on October 20, 2023. I specifically asked about Big Branch Marsh NWR, but he said that was standard on NWRs.
