Does anybody use military surplus gear for hunting?

On occasion I'll use my old Alice pack, I have a dump pouch on the back of my saddle which is Handy cause it rolls up when not in use, I hunt in multicam sometimes and my cold weather jacket liner aka the smokers jacket is probably one of my favorite army issued gear that I've used.

A lot of people have been saying that those jacket liners are awsome!

I have bought some, sizing is usually small and not very quiet. I do check sportsman's guide regularly for wool, recently bought a lightweight 100% wool sweater for layering from ebay for $12 and $12 shipping, a piece of wool base layer would cost $70.

Cool!

I’ve got an older large Alice with frame. I also have the ilbe pack. The ilbe is a heavy pack but there are guys cutting a lot of the webbing and extra straps off and getting it to around 6-7lbs. Not terrible for a pack capable of carrying a weeks worth of gear. I’ve got some of the old woodland goretex rain pants that are noisy but packable and will keep your legs dry. I’m using a Molle sustainment pouch on my saddle right now. It flopped around too much originally but with Molle connections on the top and bottom of the saddle it carries pretty good. It’s no problem putting two bottles of water and a thermacell in it. Early season in Georgia that’s all you really need. I had a field jacket I really liked the pockets in but it has disappeared.

Never used or thought to use carbon lined clothes until I saw surplus sets for right around $20-30, figured I might as well give it a shot!

old thread.. but gotta say I love My ILBE pack!!! Packed a very large bull elk out of a canyon, by myself, at 10,000 feet- in two trips. Had to go back for the cape and horns the next day. But - still. That pack made it happen!

The ILBE pack was a huge improvement over its predecessors. Apparently, the next gen packs are even better:

I've gotta be honest, though: for a lot of gear, the civilian stuff is just better. Usually lighter and less bulky. It's more expensive than the surplus stuff, though.

Hope this helps shed light on the possibilities

I haven't used it yet but in my 2020 season I will be using an Alice pack frame. I must have lost the actual Alice pack and I'll possibly pick up another one to use as well. I plan on modifying the frame with webbing to create a compartment for packing out my deer.

I've been messing with this vest for a bit..... I'll be testing and tweeking during the off season. Eastern woods outdoors + Uncle Sam.... planning on ditching backpack altogether
